The scream is loud.
It’s shrill and abrasive, and it ends as quickly as it began—like the person’s breath was abruptly interrupted.
You bolt up. The sound awakens a deep, primal urge within you, and in a matter of seconds, you’re on high alert.
The fact that you’re home alone really only makes the whole situation that much worse.
You count the seconds ever so slowly ticking by. You don’t dare to move an inch. You just hold your breath, waiting, listening to the sound of your own heartbeat in your eardrums.
When you reach 100 and there isn’t another piercing scream, only then does your body recover from the freeze instinct. You move to the windows, try to see something—anything outside.
When nothing seems to be out of the ordinary, you nervously chew at your lip. Did you just imagine it? You don’t see anyone outside; no worried onlookers trying to find the source of the noise, no frantic person wandering the streets for help, nothing.
What are the chances only you would’ve heard it?
The scream replays itself in your head. It sounded like it could’ve come from your downstairs neighbor.
You’re probably the closest person in the vicinity, you realize. If they need help, you might be the only person who could assist them.
You grab your phone and rush out the door. Down the steps, you reach your neighbor’s door and offer three quick knocks against the wood.
You wait, nervously, anxiously, every second ticking by feeling much too long for comfort. When there’s no answer, you knock again. The memory of the scream rings in your ears again, and you feel your hands get sweaty with stress.
No one answers the door. You check your phone, calculate that at least seven minutes have gone by. Would it be appropriate to call the cops?
You open the phone app, then hesitate. Would they even take you seriously? You never once called the police in your life, and just thinking about it has you conjuring up a whole slew of ways it could go wrong.
You linger around the door for a few more minutes, then eventually give up and return up to your apartment. Your plan is to call your parents or roommate or maybe even your friend—anyone who might be able to advise you on what to do. But as soon as you reach your door, you get an eerie chill up your spine. Something isn’t right.
Your door is open.
It’s just a crack; barely even noticeable, and though you did leave in a rush, you’re fairly certain you didn’t leave the door open. It’s not something you would do.
You clutch your phone between tense fingers. Calling for help—even though it should be—is no longer on your mind. All you’re thinking about is who the fuck is in your home right now—and why.
It’s, again, like a fight, flight or freeze instinct kicking in. Except this time, your usual sense of self-preservation is overridden and you’re fully ready to fight.
You open the door, half expecting to see someone in the middle of your living room, but there’s no one there. Relief nearly washes over you, until you glance down and notice a trail of dirt leading deeper into your house.
Seeing it suddenly makes it all the more real.
There’s really someone here. There’s a stranger in your house.
As quietly as humanly possible, you follow along the trail. You’re so focused that your surroundings almost seem to melt away. When you see it; the silhouette of a person you don’t recognize, who doesn’t belong here, in your house, you act without second thought.
One hard hit to the back of the head is all it takes. The person crumples to the floor on impact. You gasp, the sound completely involuntary because holy shit—did that just happen?
Suddenly remembering your phone, you yank it up and dial 911.
The person seems to be knocked out cold, and as the line is ringing, you realize your hand hurts from hitting them so hard. A wave of fear tightens in your chest. Surely, you didn’t severely injure them, right? Surely, they’re just knocked out for a little while, and then they’ll wake up, and they’ll be fine, and you won’t get into any trouble, right?
It all counts as self-defense anyways, right?
Having never called the cops before, you don’t think much of the wait time. Your mind is so preoccupied with what you’ve done, with what’s happened in such a short amount of time, that you don’t even realize how long you’re waiting for.
But then you start to get nervous that the intruder will wake up. Or, worse, that they won’t wake up. The line is still ringing, and when you bring your phone down to check how long it’s been, you find that over five minutes have passed.
What the fuck is going on?
You can only stand to wait a few more minutes before you realize no one’s going to answer.
Maybe something’s down with the lines, or some other big emergency happened elsewhere and they don’t have the staff required to answer. Whatever it is, you’re on your own right now.
You hang up, tell yourself you’ll call back in a few minutes, and then you’re left staring at the knocked-out body of the intruder.
Judging by the shape and size of the figure, they seem to be male. They’re relatively tall and lean, with a square kind of build that tapers down at their hips. You can’t see their face, but they have thick, curly brown hair that reaches below their ears.
You should flip them over, you think. You should flip them over and take a picture of their face so that you have some kind of proof.
You kneel down, wrap your fingers around their form, and, as gently as you can so as to not wake them, you turn them over.
Your stomach drops at the sight. You can’t see their face since it’s hidden beneath orange-tilted goggles and some kind of mouthguard. But it’s what you see on their clothes that has you feeling light-headed.
Blood.
They’re covered in it.
It’s splattered along the front of their hoody, staining the fabric in a dark crimson color. You can’t tell if it’s theirs or someone else’s, and though all logic points to the former, you don’t even want to piece everything together.
You notice as well, now that they’re turned over, that they have a belt tied around their hips. And two blood-soaked axes are hanging from it.
You nearly scream, but the bile threatening to rise up your throat has you holding it all in. And you’re thankful for it, because god knows you don’t want them to wake up now.
If you weren’t high on adrenaline, you’re certain you’d be panicking—more so than you are now, at least. But it’s like your senses are heightened, and your thoughts are much clearer than they otherwise would be, and something inside you is forcing you to stay as calm as possible.
Secure them.
You need to find something to secure them before they wake up.
The best thing you can find on such short notice is a long-sleeved shirt you’d haphazardly left in the living room. You’d meant to put it away, but you hadn’t gotten to it yet—and you’ve never been so thankful for your laziness.
Your hands are shaking as you wrap the sleeves around the stranger’s wrists. You try to make it as tight as possible, and then you knot it over and over again until you’ve no more fabric left to tighten.
You’re grabbing your phone and dialing 911 again as soon as you can. But when you bring it up to your ear, the line doesn’t ring. You wait—fifteen seconds, thirty, a minute—expecting the ringing to start at any moment, but it doesn’t.
On the other end of the line, there’s just silence. Eerie, cold, dead silence. The ends of your hair stand at attention from the goosebumps rising on your skin. Something’s definitely not right.
Just as you’re about to hang up—static blares from your phone. It’s loud and unbearable and completely overpowering, like the sound is ringing inside your own head. It's impossible to think straight.
You scream, throwing your phone to stop the noise. But even with the phone away from your ears, it’s like the noise keeps echoing in your mind. All you can do is press your hands to your ears and squeeze your eyes shut and scream in agony.
It’s dizzying. It’s nauseating. You have no space to think, no space to do anything but clutch your ears and pray the noise will stop. It’s maddening.
You feel like you’re on the verge of passing out from the sheer pain and intensity of it all when, in an instant, it stops.
You don’t pull your hands away from your ears for a good few seconds afterward. Your heart is pumping loudly in your chest. Your jaw hurts from grinding your teeth. Every muscle in your body feels sore from overexertion.
What just happened—are you losing your mind?
Slowly, you hesitantly let go of your head and open your eyes.
He’s awake.
You don’t know if it was your screaming that woke him up—all you know is that he’s conscious, and he's sitting upright and looking at you.
A mix of emotions wash over you at once. You’re relieved he’s alive, confused as to what the hell just happened—and most of all—you’re fucking nauseous with fear.
Fear regarding the source of that noise, but also regarding the fact that there’s a stranger in your house, covered in blood, and the cops aren’t answering. There’s something wrong with your phone, you're home alone, and your neighbor might be bleeding out beneath the floor under your feet. And there's a stranger restrained in your house and you have no idea what the fuck to do.
The worst part is that the person—that man—looks like he's completely calm and at ease. Like he's in total control of the situation.
The nausea worsens, butterflies making you utterly sick to your stomach. It almost feels like you're the one restrained, not him. You’re trapped with him.
You don’t know what to do with yourself.
You stare at him, and he stares back. Or, at least, you think he does; it’s hard to tell beneath his colored lenses.
Your gaze flickers to the hatchets, still secured around his waist. You kick yourself for not taking them off of him. And then you look at your phone, which you threw halfway between you and him, and you swallow back the lump in your throat.
When you look back at him, you notice that he’d followed your gaze to also look at your phone. He looks back at you, tilts his head, and your stomach twists in knots.
Why isn’t he saying anything?
You feel like you’ve accidentally trapped some kind of predatory animal in your apartment. It feels like, at any moment, if you make the wrong move, he’ll lunge at you and rip your throat out.
Never once breaking eye contact, as if he might free himself the second you look away, you slowly creep forward to reach your phone.
He doesn’t say a single word as you move, which makes it all the worse. He merely watches you, curiously, like you're one of the most fascinating things he's ever seen.
When you finally reach your phone, you pick it up, open it, and dial 911 again.
You’re hesitant to press it to your ears. You don’t know what kind of malfunction happened earlier, but you’re not too keen on repeating the experience. You hold it at somewhat of a distance, just in case.
It doesn’t ring.
Just like earlier, all that comes through the line is dead silence. You wait maybe a minute before, out of fear of the static interrupting again, you close the line.
You try not to let your panic show through, because you can feel the stranger eyeing your every move. You dial your roommate’s number, but it’s the same problem.
With unsteady hands, you text your parents that you need help contacting 911. Although they don’t live close to you anymore, they’re usually the fastest to answer your texts. And you need help fast.
When they don’t answer, you text your roommate and friends the same thing. Surely, at least one of them is bound to see the text and help you—right?
“You can—you can try all you want. You won’t be able t-to reach anyone, a-anyways.”
Your blood freezes.
It takes you a second to register his words, and another to react.
“What… what do you mean?” you ask, though the words make your tongue go numb, as if your body’s warning you that just talking to him is a bad idea.
“He’s watching.”
In the culmination of your entire lifetime, you don’t recall having ever felt such pure, tangible fear.
The feeling is similar to that sensation you get when you’re at the peak of a nightmare—when you’re just about to come face-to-face with the monster, or when you’re about to reach the ground after falling from a great height—when you’re just about to die and it all feels so real.
But this moment feels surreal.
“Who’s watching?”
There’s more conviction in your voice than you feel in your entire nervous system. You don’t know how you manage to sound so calm, so self-assured and in control of the situation, but it’s certainly not how you feel on the inside.
“He is. The one who’s—“ he cracks his neck abruptly to the side, interrupting his own sentence before finishing, “always watching.”
Another chill up your spine, though you manage to mask it fairly well, all things considered.
“Don’t—don’t worry. The police will be here—here—they’ll be here soon. Maybe 15, 20 minutes?”
You don’t know whether you should be relieved or unnerved by his reassurance.
“How… do you know that?” you ask hesitantly.
He shrugs, the movement entirely too comfortable, entirely too nonchalant.
“S-s’almost always the same.”
You want out. You want out of this conversation, out of this whole situation. You want him out of your house.
“What do you mean?” you ask, “How many times have you done this?”
You don’t know if you want the answer to your own question. In all honesty, you don’t even want to consider what the “this” in your question even refers to.
But it’s out of your mouth before you can even stop yourself.
He tilts his head, like he’s considering it. And then, after a few seconds, he shrugs again.
“Lost count.”
You don’t like his answer.
15-20 minutes, you think. There’s a chance he's lying, a chance he just said that to put you at ease and prevent you from trying to call again.
But there’s a chance he’s right.
There’s a chance some of your neighbors heard, or your friends and family saw your text and have managed to call for help. Either way, you realize that you have time to burn. You need to stay calm, focused.
He doesn’t seem agitated, which you take to be a good thing. He doesn’t seem frustrated or angry or unstable. If anything, it’s like he’s open to talking.
What more could you ask for?
You rack your brain for the best course of action. But you’re at a loss. You’re panicking on the inside.
You realize that one of the best things you could probably do is keep him preoccupied, keep him distracted.
“…How old are you?”
You don’t know why that, of all things, is the first question to come to mind. But it seems like a safe enough bet; it’s not too personal so as to upset him, and yet it might help narrow his identity or motivations down.
If only you’d had the chance to remove his mask and snap a pic of his face before he woke up.
You don’t expect him to take as long to answer as he does. He tilts his head again, looks up like he’s trying to calculate something in his head.
And then his answer sends another wave of unease through your system.
“Lost count,” he admits.
You don’t know what his answer means, what it might entail, but part of you doesn’t even want to know that either, at this point.
You rack your brain for another neutral question, when he suddenly jerks his shoulder and pops it in a motion that doesn’t look entirely voluntary.
You pause.
Is he on drugs or something?
That would explain a few things, though not everything.
He seems to be coherent enough to hold somewhat of a conversation, but it’s not like he’s making the most sense. At the very least, having something to blame some of the strangeness on makes the situation somewhat more tolerable.
To test out your theory, you ask him outright, “Why are you here? Do you know where you are?”
He looks around, like he’s only now noticing he’s in your apartment.
“This the—this the—the upstairs unit? Your place?”
You nod, slowly, but even as you do, you’re not entirely sure you want him to know that. And then you also don’t really want to know the answer to the next question, but you need to ask.
“What happened?”
Nothing could’ve prepared you for his answer. The way he states it too—so simply, so obviously, like it was as normal of a thing as going out for groceries—makes you completely sick to your stomach.
It’s like the magnitude of the situation fully crashes down on you when he answers.
“I killed her.”

in the broad spectrum of things, opening the door in nothing but your bathrobe and a ridiculously bright orange clay mask is not the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you.
oh no, puking on your first ever date at seventeen definitely takes the cake. finding your seventh-grade friends bent over a table reading your diary--in which you wrote many explicit things about them, not to mention, yourself--might be even worse. riding your bike into the pond by your house in front of all of your--much older, much cooler--neighbors, even. picking up your coffee in your favorite cafe and spilling it, which was not only devastating but humiliating because you managed to spill your mocha on every other drink waiting there (effectively banning you from returning) still haunts your dreams. even walking down the street and trying to pretend like you didn't just trip over air in front of every single one of your peers still lingers in your mind, waiting for a moment of peace before it attacks.
you're used to the feeling of dread in your stomach and the nights spent thinking about all of these moments, like a scrapbook in your mind--just there to make your skin itch.
but, it does get a little bit worse when you realize the man you've opened the door to is none other than a potential roommate; and when you remember that you forgot he was coming.
or when you have to pull your robe tighter around your abdomen just to make sure that you don't give this man a show before you even shake his hand.
"is this apartment 214?" he asks, looking right at you--and your legs, naturally--with a confused grin on his face, but grin nonetheless.
so immediately you slam the door.
you turn around, with wide eyes, face crackling from the movement, and check your phone frantically. yes, it is the 18th, and yes it is 11:32, which means he was supposed to be here over a half-an-hour ago.
and also you've just slammed the door in his--satoru gojo, the only person who's even bothered to respond to your ad about an available room--face.
oh, fuck.
so you groan, refraining from knocking your head against the door just in case he can still hear, and open it again. a little bit less this time.
"gojo?" you ask, voice rough and slightly irritated.
"the one and only. i'm pretty sure this is the right apartment," he says, and you don't fail to notice his tone of voice as he continues, "but if it's not, then fate must've brought us together."
you narrow your eyes, hoping that he doesn't notice the specks of dust that ebb from your skin. "you're late."
"and you're less than dressed."
"i thought you stood me up."
he snorts. "so you started an impromptu spa day? or was this supposed to be another perk of the apartment?"
you glower, opening the door a bit more just so he can see the fury in your eyes. "i don't think someone who doesn't even text to cancel has any right to judge my self-care practices."
"i didn't cancel. i'm here."
"you're late."
"so i've heard..." he drawls.
you blink at him, and he blinks back--or at least, you're assuming. because he's wearing sunglasses even though it's cloudy outside.
and he's aggressively taller than you. he might not even fit through the door.
you don't look away, waiting for him to break. which he does because you're well-practiced in men of his standard. "so, are you going to let me in?" he asks.
"are you going to apologize for being late?"
"i'm sorry that i'm late," he says, immediately, with an air of fake sincerity. "i got stuck in traffic. i would've called, but my phone died."
"really?"
the smile reappears, as if from magic. "no, but did it make you want to let me in?"
you glare even harder--which is tough, honestly--and begin to shut the door. until your plan is interrupted by a foot. "excuse you," you say, to this man, who you already hate. and his stupid chelsea boots.
"look, i'm sorry. i'm trying to ease the tension--because honestly i wasn't expecting to get an eyeful this early in the morning, and you seem uncomfortable--"
you slam the door against his foot again.
gojo doesn't even wince. "and also, you're, like, the only person with a room in the middle of october. and i... could really use a place to put my bed. so, can i look around, at least? i'll keep my eyes closed every time i'm facing your direction. i can even give you my rent money today if it works out."
something in his voice already implies that it will.
and, well. despite your very short robe and your very dry face mask, he is the only person who's even inquired about the room. and you desperately need a roommate; someone to clean up with, someone to make coffee for, someone to argue about toilet paper direction with, and, most importantly, someone who has money and can keep you from getting evicted from the only place you've lived since high school.
so you sigh. think about moving back home and suffering at the will of your parents.
it takes about three seconds to say, "will you wait out here while i get dressed?"
an eyebrow peeks out from behind the sunglasses, as white as his hair. "how long?"
"ten minutes. maybe twenty."
"do you have a chair?" he asks and moves his foot from the door.
and so you close it without answering and rush to your room to find something that's still clean.
there's nothing that you'll actually wear, but satoru gojo doesn't deserve your fresh appearance anyway. he can have day-old wrinkled jeans and a t-shirt you got when you were twelve.
as slow as humanly possible, you remove the face mask, trying to keep your hair out of the way, and think about putting on makeup--which you probably would have done, had you remembered he was even coming--but decide not to.
in reality, it only takes about seven minutes for you to look mostly presentable and get rid of the mugs you left cluttered around the dining room table.
but you wait an extra four, just to mess with him.
and then, eleven minutes later, you open the door again to the man leaning against the wall, playing what looks like candy crush on his phone.
you attempt a fake smile.
"hey," he says, with that same grin, "you have clothes."
you drop your face. "i will close this."
he isn't phased, just pockets his phone and leans in to look behind you at the entryway.
you roll your eyes, but open the door anyway, and usher him in. he rubs his feet against your welcome mat and toys with a keychain you have hanging from a coat rack, then looks to you, like he's waiting for a tour. which, you guess, he is.
"there's only two rooms, one bath. it's not very big, so if you need a lot of space..."
"i can manage," he says, and follows you as you walk into the kitchen. "did you decorate?"
"um... sort of."
"sort of?"
"i, uh, had a roommate before and he bought most of the decorations before i moved in. but i've added a few things. i'm not picky about aesthetics."
gojo hums. "why'd he move out?"
"we were together and he cheated on me," you say, flatly, as you have been for the past month and a half. "and then told me i couldn't use his netflix account anymore after i broke up with him."
gojo merely blinks and gestures toward the wall behind you. "so you didn't buy that dancing frog thing?"
you turn around, rolling your eyes. "no. i forgot that was there."
"okay, good, 'cause that's hideous."
you snort, but nod your head and walk down the hallway. gojo's footsteps follow you as you open the door to his potential bedroom. "it's the bigger of the two," you tell him, "but the bathroom is next to mine."
"did you change rooms?"
"what?"
"when your ex moved out. why take the smaller one?"
"oh," you rub a finger against the wall, rubbing dust off of it. "it was his room before we got together. and then we shared my current room. this was his man... den?" you try, shaking your head. "gaming room? slaughterhouse?"
gojo snorts.
"what?"
"oh, nothing," he says, airy like he's teasing you. "just curious."
you step back so he can walk around, check the carpets for stains, or look for drywall you could've hidden a body behind. but he doesn't, only watches you as you furrow your brows.
"you're not going to look around?"
"it looks like the pictures."
"yeah, but what if there are, like, bugs in the carpet? blood on the walls?"
"are there bugs in the carpet?" he asks. "blood on the walls?"
"not that i know of..."
"great, then it's perfect," he says, and steps out of the room again, whistling as he goes.
this time, you follow him, like he's the one giving the tour.
he pauses at the door a couple of feet down. "this your room?"
"yes."
"can i see?"
you scowl. "no. what do you mean 'it's perfect?'"
"i mean, i'd like to live here. it's nice. besides the frog."
you lean against the wall, trying to inspect him for any mechanical parts. is this a ploy? some joke? "you've barely been here five minutes."
"twenty with all the time i waited outside..."
"you can't just take one look and say 'yup, this is good.'"
"can't you?" he asks, challenging.
"no."
gojo's grin seems to widen, impossibly. "well, i'm not picky."
and somehow you doubt that.
but you don't get the chance to tell him that, or anything else, because he leans against the wall, still smiling at you, and asks, "so, are we roommates now?"
"you haven't even seen the lease. or heard about the house rules."
"house rules?" he repeats, dubiously. like you're making this up (which you are).
"yes."
"such as?"
"no..." you pause, 'cause this is a fickle argument. something about his stupid smile makes you want to argue with him. or maybe it's the hair. or the sunglasses. "murdering anyone in the apartment."
he laughs, unexpectedly, and sighs. "well, i guess i'll take my murdering someplace else."
"and... you can't leave any utensils in the sink."
"okay."
"and i'm not cleaning up any beard shavings, or sharing my tampons with you, or any people you have over."
"these are very extensive," he says, unserious. "anything else?"
"i..." your brows furrow. "no hogging the bathroom. hot water is fickle. and you have to recycle."
"it might be challenging, but we'll figure it out."
"these are not negotiable."
he only continues to smile at you.
eventually, after staring back with a frown that feels slightly permanent for more than a minute, you sigh again. at least you won't have to worry about moving out.
"fine. you still want to live here?"
"mmhmm."
"okay," and you stick your hand out for him to shake like this is a business transaction.
and it seems that you'll be seeing a lot more of that grin in the future.
*
living with satoru gojo is not... well, it's not hard. he's a normal enough roommate.
he pays his rent on time and doesn't touch the coffee you make in the morning most days--coughing when he does. he man spreads on the couch and watches movies way too loud and doesn't hang his bag up at the door, preferring to, instead, set it on the counter like a maniac. he whistles when he walks, and wears his stupid sunglasses 80% of the time, and grins at you when you're irritated, and, honestly, he's not really half bad.
he doesn't leave any huge messes for you to clean up (mostly because he doesn't use the kitchen or the dining table ever). he doesn't invite people over that keep you up all night (because he's gone most nights). and, actually, he keeps the bathroom quite clean (even if he takes up well more than half of the shower space with his weird face creams and deep conditioning treatments).
but satoru gojo is hard.
it's not what he does, but rather who he is. with his infuriating good looks--taking up most of the fair share for the rest of the population--and his subtle charm, which, if you didn't know who he was, might actually work on you, and his morning voice and his messy hair and just the way he lives.
like breathing is just what he's supposed to be doing. like he doesn't need to worry about a thing because nothing should matter if he decides he doesn't want it to.
so easygoing and naturally intuitive and far too exhausting for you.
because, as a fatal flaw of your own, you love to mess with him. somedays you'll hope he shows up just so you have someone to fight with. just so you'll be irritated instead of stressed, frustrated instead of exhausted.
it's kind of addicting, in a way. and masochistic, but you've never claimed to be completely sane.
and honestly, gojo's just asking for it.
after a mere month of living with his aura around, you come to expect his cockiness. you live to take him down a notch.
so when he's up this early in the morning, whistling like it's his god-given right, you scowl at him just as he enters the room.
"woah," he says, sliding on a bar stool in front of you. "starting early this morning?"
"you're banned from talking to me until noon."
"is this about the ice cream i ate? cause there was only a little left..."
"no it's--" you pause, frowning at him. "you ate my ice cream?"
he lays his entire torso on the counter, pathetically. "i was dying, okay? low blood sugar was going to kill me, and i couldn't see anything else but that ice cream and it wasn't even very good anyway, so, really, i was saving you from having to endure the rest of it."
"you ate my ice cream?" you repeat.
"i'll buy you more. a better kind. and then you'll understand that i was doing you a favor."
"i might kill you."
"i thought we banned homicide from the apartment."
"i was going to eat that," you whine, shoving his hands away from trying to grab your mug.
he smiles, too bright for so early in the morning. "yesterday you told me sweets weren't an appropriate breakfast."
you scoff. "yeah, cause that's all you eat. you need a green smoothie or something in the morning just to keep your heart beating for the rest of the day."
"my heart beats very well, thank you. wanna feel?"
you roll your eyes and sigh into your mug. "i'll be expecting three pints of ice cream as an apology later tonight."
gojo has already moved on, typing away on his phone, probably to some groupies he manipulated into loving him. "i can't. it's flip night at laurent's tonight, and suguru has already threatened me into coming."
"why did you say laurent's like i'm supposed to know what you mean?"
"laurent's," he repeats, looking at you.
you blink.
"the bar?" he questions, like you're crazy.
"okay, sorry, i don't exclusively hang out at bars filled with frat boys."
"it's very sophisticated,” he corrects, his frat boy nature very obvious. “i mean, i frequent there."
you laugh.
"clearly you've never been."
"i'm still expecting ice cream."
he sits back in his chair. "i have class all day."
"like you've never skipped a class."
"encouraging ditching?" he asks, mock appalled. "what kind of roommate are you?"
"the kind that doesn't steal her roommate's food. just get one of your servants to pick it up.”
gojo waves a hand at you, and that statement, apparently. and then he types another thing into his phone—to said servants you assume—and grins again. his face must’ve missed the feeling. "how about i buy you a drink instead? you can come with me tonight. meet my friends. maybe make some of your own."
"haha," you cross your arms. "if they're as bad as you, then i'm good."
"you'd probably love them. they also like to torment me, even though i'm pretty and perfectly nice to them."
"i seriously doubt that."
his eyes--oh, yes, this early in the morning he skips the sunglasses--sparkle like gems. "i have to play wingman for suguru, but it probably won't take long. you can mingle. meet someone. i think you could use a way to relieve some of that stress."
"oh, you mean the stress that you cause?"
gojo grins and you realize that you've fallen into his trap. "i'm willing to help out whenever you like," he says, deviously, "you just haven't asked yet, sweetheart."
"nor ever will," you grind out.
gojo hums and taps his fingers against the countertop. the two of you stare at each other, grin matching scowl, and eventually, he loses the contest. "so, can i plan to steal you away from eternal solitude at six?" he asks.
and just because he's right--in his weird, satoru gojo way--you nod. it might be nice to get out of the house; and meet people other than the lost freshman at work. and because you know that gojo will continue to bother you about it otherwise. he’s a very difficult person.
as if proving it, he grins all pleased with himself, so you add, "but you're buying all of my drinks." before he can get too ahead of himself.
*
it's not nearly loud enough in this bar. as soon as you walk in, you're sure of it.
because even with a band up on the stage, singing about loving someone or money or drugs, you can still hear gojo as he flirts with every single living thing in his twenty-foot vicinity.
he's got his grin on, styled his hair all fancy, and his clothes are signature in the way that you've probably seen him wear the same thing fifty times. maybe in a row.
but the people in this bar don't care. no, they flirt back like they already know who satoru gojo is. and maybe they do.
you don't really care, but you do have to drag him along so he can show you where you're supposed to sit and tell you the names of his friends before you get drunk enough to forget.
it takes three minutes of trailing after gojo like a lost puppy to remember that you hate going out. that you hate everything about your so-called roommate and you should've shoved his invitation down the drain along with him.
as if gojo can hear this thought, he peeks over his shoulder, smirking at you. "enjoying the view?" he asks, and you try to trip him by stepping on his heel.
unfortunately, he only swings around, walking backward through the crowd like it's going to part for him.
oh, wait. it does.
you frown at him.
"what? you don't like the music?" he pouts because that would personally offend him, of course.
"where are we going? i think we've passed that table four times already."
"i have to say hi," he says like this is obvious. "it's rude to just walk into some place without greeting everyone."
"do you own this bar?"
"what? no."
"then find your friends so we can sit down," you grumble, trying not to lose him in the sea of people. it's unlikely that you've ever seen a bar this packed. more like a club, honestly, but you wouldn't put it past gojo to lie.
eventually, he does lead you to a table, announcing, with a flourish. "don't worry, everyone, i'm here," while he bows--because of course he does. "and," he adds, "i brought a stowaway."
you peek around his shoulder to meet three people, all staring at him with the same unamused expression. one, suguru--from the many photo albums and 'trips down memory lane' gojo has bombarded you with--gives you a little wave. the other two just continue to stare at gojo.
"everyone, this is y/n, my favorite roommate. y/n, that one is suguru," he says, pointing towards him, "which you already know. the short one is shoko, and the blonde one is--"
"nanami," you cut in, "hey."
gojo frowns, looking between the two of you. "you know each other?"
"we have analytics together," you answer, sliding in to sit across them, next to gojo, naturally. "i usually cheat off of his notes."
"she gets me coffee," nanami adds, like this information is imperative.
gojo grins again. "why didn't you say anything nanamin?"
"because i didn't realize."
"who else could i have been talking about? do you know several pretty girls named y/n? you a player?"
nanami has a very familiar frown on his face, and is about to say something when suguru seems to kick gojo under the table. "satoru, i told you to stop referring to other people as 'players.'"
gojo merely rolls his eyes. "can't fight the truth," he says.
you almost smile. almost. but your eyes drift over to shoko, who sighs. "how'd you get stuck with this one?" she asks, not harsh, but not quite soft.
"he promised me alcohol."
she nods knowingly.
speaking of, you turn towards him. "you and i both know there's only one reason i'm here."
gojo flicks your forehead, but stands up. "i'll be right back," he says, "don't miss me too much."
and you all watch as he walks away, conveniently stopping at least four times to talk to several different people.
you groan. "he's not coming back is he?"
"he will," suguru says, not quite reassuringly. "probably. in an hour or so."
you cover your eyes with your hands and listen as the three of them laugh at you.
*
it probably is an hour or two later that you see gojo again.
you'd fallen into smooth conversation with his friends, talking about classes, and dancing, and the fact that you all shared a common enemy. it was easy enough, talking to them, like ripples in a pond. but surely if gojo had stuck around, it would've been more of a tsunami. you could see the appeal--at least for someone like your roommate. they all seemed responsible enough.
but shoko, after a twenty-second lull in conversation, decided she was better off drinking at home, and nanami quickly agreed. watching them, compared to gojo, disappear into the crowd was a different experience.
you bite your cheek unnervingly, wondering if it made you a bad roommate to want to let gojo suffer here alone and walk home by himself.
suguru pats you on the shoulder when he stands up a moment later, brushing his pants. "i'll go find satoru," he says, softly. you feel that same irritation when you realize that gojo had probably lied to you about coming here for suguru. it was almost infinitely more times likely that suguru had come here for him. "do you want me to tell him you went home?"
"how likely is it that he'll go home with someone else and it won't matter if i wait for him anyway?"
the dark-haired man considers this with a sly grin on his face. "if i tell him you left, he'll find someone to cling to. but if you're here he'll go home with you. probably drunk, though."
you run a hand through your hair, waving him off. "it's fine. i'll wait, then. but tell him that the homicide clause doesn't apply to outside the apartment."
suguru laughs, not questioning this, and walks away.
you sit there, toying with a glass someone had left behind, watching the people around you dance like it really was a club. with absolutely no one watching. not even god, evidently.
as usual, gojo lied--even though you hadn't really believed him when he said this place was sophisticated. the clear air of stale beer and vomit is enough to prove that.
you almost laugh bitterly, but then a mop of white hair appears in the chair next to you, and his grin is wider, larger than you'd remembered.
how long had that taken?
"hello hello, roomie," he sings, leaning close to you. he moves his chair, shuffling across the floor so that he's near enough to touch. "i heard you were threatening me again."
"you could hear that over the sighs of your fan club?"
gojo giggles, like he's in on the joke. his breath falls on your face. "i like it when you tell me you're going to murder me, you know."
"of course you do. how much did you drink?"
"it's not the quantity," he whispers, "it's the quality."
"your friends told me you could get drunk off of hand sanitizer."
gojo leans back, his long legs knocking against yours. "are they spreading those rumors again?"
you kick his foot away from yours but don't say anything. his eyes seem somehow wider right now, even behind his dark shades. almost like you could see them.
you blink, and gojo does it back. his lashes fluttering just enough to tell.
it almost makes you smile. laugh a little bit at his innocence--especially right now, when he's clearly not himself--some more unperturbed version of who he normally is (if that's even possible). he probably wouldn't even remember if you did laugh at him. but you refrain anyway.
gojo gasps suddenly. "oh! let's go to the store. you want ice cream, right?" his elbow slides onto the table as he rests his chin on a hand.
you kick his foot again. "i wanted a drink," you correct, "but apparently you got distracted."
"'s not my fault," he almost slurs, sadly.
"are you ready to go home?"
"i'm ready to leave. so we can get your ice cream. want to share a spoon?" his grin is unabashed. you could tell him that he is a vile, disgusting creature right now and he would probably agree.
you don't, for whatever reason.
"i don't think anywhere's open, and i don't want to drag you around while you're this drunk."
he taps your thigh with a finger. "hey. i'll have you know that i am a very proficient walker."
"oh, really?"
"learned when i was a kid and everything."
"wow, gojo, i'm very impressed," you deadpan, and look around. "do you need to say goodbye to suguru?"
he frowns. then points to himself. "gojo," he repeats, and into the crowd, "suguru."
like he's an actual toddler.
you shake your head and stand up, still looking. "can you text him?"
"i guess," he mumbles, getting out his phone and almost dropping it. he frowns like this is deeply upsetting.
so you grab it from him. "what's your passcode?"
"one one one one." you look at him with a brow raised. "cause i'm number one," he answers, pridefully.
you scoff, but look through his texts anyway, and tell suguru that you're taking him home--and never ever coming out with him again--and then hand it back to gojo.
he smiles at you. you roll your eyes.
then he grabs your hand, and begins to pull. "c'mon before they find us," he says, and it doesn't make any sense.
but were you really expecting it to?
*
perhaps the aftermath of drunk gojo is even more entertaining than the actual thing.
shoko hadn't been kidding when she said he was the worst drunk--and even worse when hungover.
how do you know this? oh, because you woke up at one in the afternoon--perfectly respectable for a saturday--and as soon as you dared to even open your door gojo was already groaning about the noise. so you slam it a little as you leave.
there's a grunt, like a dying cat, and two minutes later he is walking into the kitchen with slits for eyes and cotton for hair. you're not sure what he's wearing--some video game shirt--but it's wrinkled enough to match your roommate's appearance. disheveled and slightly peeved, he's almost glaring at you--like he's capable of such a thing.
you try not to laugh.
"where's the bacon?" he asks, almost slipping off of the counter as he leans on it. his hands rubbing at his eyes.
"sorry?"
"wheres the bacon?" he repeats, his voice a different register this morning. "i need emergency bacon."
"so make some. there's a pan and probably a package in the fridge."
he whines, falling against the counter again. his natural habitat. "i can't make it, i'm dying. you really want your terminally ill roommate to cook for himself?"
"i want my overdramatic roommate to act like an adult for a change."
he blows a raspberry, and his face is hidden beneath the tile of your table. you can only see his hair, which looks surprisingly soft for his state.
"did you lose some pigment in your hair?"
gojo snaps up, immediately, gasping. he pulls a strand so he can look at it, blinking rapidly. his panic quickly fades, and he blows the strand out of his eyes. "it's just dirty."
"from what?"
"i forgot to buy new bedsheets," he grumbles, once again hiding his face.
"your bedsheets are dying your hair?" you ask, with a raised brow.
"they're dirty," he repeats, rolling his eyes as he sits up. "i need to go to the store."
"um..." you look at him as he slumps against his own body, feeling greatly concerned for his survival abilities. "you buy new bedsheets?" you confirm, "instead of washing them?"
he waves a hand, blowing you, and your clearly audaious sentence away. "bacon," he says, flatly.
you roll your eyes. "pan," you point, "stove."
gojo looks like he might start crying.
and it might be his state or the fact that you don't think you've ever seen him like this--in the month you've known him--all lost and confused and a little bit ruffled at the edges. gojo's snark is usually in its top form when you see him in the morning.
so, just this once, you grab a pan, and turn on the burner.
"i'll be expecting payment for my time," you say, as you grab the bacon from the fridge.
and maybe you get your first real smile from your roommate.
*
you're lying on the couch reading a book when he appears, swarming like a fly.
"hello, roommate," he says, uncharacteristically pleasant, and then he sits on your legs. you try to kick him, but it proves futile because apparently he's a giant, so you wiggle your way out from under him and sit up, frowning.
"don't you have a room?" you ask.
"i could ask you the same thing," gojo tries to tickle your feet, but you move them away before he can. your frown turns into more of a glare. "what?" he asks, "we can't hang out?"
"no."
gojo pouts. "but we're roommates," he says as if it's an explanation. like being roommates binds your souls and forever intertwines the two of you.
"we are roommates because i had an extra room and you had money. that doesn't seem like thrilling grounds for friendship."
"well, how about the fact that i let you use my hair dryer the other day?" he lays down on the other side of the couch, smirking at you. "that's a friendly thing to do."
"that's the polite thing to do. i'm trying to train you. speaking of which..." you point towards the floor, "down boy."
he takes off his sunglasses, throwing them on the coffee table--which probably explains the broken mug pieces you found in the trash the other day--and lays back with his arms behind his head. his eyes are closed. "i can't be trained."
"clearly."
you sigh and relax in your corner of the couch, picking up your book again. his presence lurks like a nightmare, but, you figure, eventually, he'll get bored.
you just can't entertain him. it's like the advice you'd give to a kid being bullied: they only care about your reaction...
as if proving your point, after twenty-seven seconds of silence, he opens one eye, peeking at you. "whatcha reading?"
"a book."
he plucks it right out of your hands, inspecting the cover. how he got across the couch in 0.2 seconds, you don't know.
"what is this?" he asks, snickering a little. "word porn?"
you take it back. "it's called romance, gojo. not that i'd expect you to be familiar with anything of the sort."
he smirks, laying back down. "i have references if you need proof."
you shake your head, flipping him off, and continue to scan the words on your page without retaining any information.
seriously, his presence is impending doom itself.
"it's okay," he whispers, "you don't need to be embarrassed. everyone craves intimacy."
"i crave my fist on your face."
he snorts. "that's not very friendly."
you sigh, dropping the book again so you can look at him and his obnoxious eyes. "look, i'm tired, it's been a long week, and if you don't leave me alone i'll probably lock you outside."
"probably?"
"it's that or throwing you out the window."
gojo laughs once again, but mimes zipping his mouth shut. you roll your eyes and open your book again. your feet are entwined, but you don't mock this--if only because you're sure that gojo will start an argument about it.
the quiet lasts for two minutes and then he turns on the tv.
you groan and he laughs at you.
*
you're getting used to having him around, at least. and in turn, his friends. because they seem to be a package deal.
after that night at the bar, gojo--apparently--feels much more comfortable having them over. trying to bake cookies with shoko or interrupting what's supposed to be a study session between the four of them.
at least, you think, watching this happen, that you're not the only person forced to endure him.
but it's kind of... nice to see him act like a normal person, for once. to get teased by someone other than you and pout like a begrudged younger brother. the person who invites his friends over for game night (getting aggressively angry every time he loses) isn't satoru gojo, the man whom everyone is drawn to. he isn't some drunk guy charming everyone around him or a roommate that you just happened upon.
he's just another college student, laughing along with people who aren't nearly as bad as him.
and, naturally, you find yourself intertwined with these 'hang-outs' because the apartment is small, and you don't want to be left out--no, you choose not to think about how pathetic it is that satoru gojo has more friends than you do, so please don't bring it up.
and it's on this night when you're not playing uno with the four of them, but rather, watching behind all of their backs and trying to mess with gojo as much as possible.
you pretend to be idly cleaning in the kitchen, when really you're standing behind him, mouthing to suguru what color he has whenever he's about to win.
"hmm," the sly-mouthed man says this time, "green."
shoko puts down a seven, and gojo groans again. "seriously?" he asks, but begins drawing cards.
you try--and fail--not to giggle behind him. to which, of course, he turns around with an obvious glare in his eyes. "what are you doing?"
the sink isn't on, and there are no dishes to be seen in the kitchen. nonetheless, you point uselessly to the roll of paper towels on the counter. "cleaning."
"you're cleaning air?"
"sorry, i didn't realize i was banned from loitering in my own home."
he turns back around, looking at suguru for a moment, then back at you. it's very hard to keep the smile off of your face, especially when nanami looks like he's about to break and shoko is pretending to rifle through her cards again.
how many times have you done this to him? oh, just a mere eight.
to be fair, it would've ended a long time ago if gojo wasn't such a sore loser.
he looks back and forth once more. then he frowns. "what are you doing?"
"do you want me to go hide in my room, gojo?" you ask, trying to scowl. "because i will. i was just trying to be hospitable--"
"nanamin," he interrupts. "go."
so another round of cards is placed, and this time suguru plays normally, keeping his face straight to not draw any suspicion. you lean against the wall, enjoying yourself.
(don't tell anyone, but this is the most fun you've had in a while).
and then, after a couple of rounds go by, you finally clear your throat. gojo turns to glare at you through his sunglasses and says "go stand behind suguru if you're going to watch. i don't trust you."
you raise your brows but do as he says.
and when shoko has to draw the next time, you smile and tap a couple of times on your thigh.
suguru does his best impression of gojo's grin, and says, "draw four," to shoko.
she smiles back. turns to gojo. "draw four," she repeats.
and he stares at the two of them, then the cards stacked on top of each other, and then to you, right across him. "what are you doing? i know you're doing something."
"satoru, she's just watching--"
"no, she's smiling." he looks back to you, "you're smiling. you don't do that unless i'm in pain."
"so you just assume that you're losing cause i'm... what? drawing your cards for you? shuffling the stack so only you get the bad hands?" you cock a brow at him, willing yourself not to look at anyone else at the table. it would only end in disaster.
"i--" gojo runs a hand through his hair. then he sighs and begins drawing his eight cards.
and several rounds later--with gojo losing once again--you've begun moving around the table like you're inspecting each player. gojo doesn't let you look at his cards though.
and it takes a while before he notices anything. particularly after suguru wins for the third time in a row.
he looks at everyone--brows pulled together, irritated eyes hiding behind his sunglasses, and his cheeks are flushed from how frustrated he is--and as soon as you start laughing at his face, everyone else does too. suguru throws his cards down and shakes his head. nanami shuffles the deck while trying to keep his laugh muffled--but it's there. and shoko is outwardly laughing at him, pointing at gojo and then at you.
"are you guys stealing the cards?" he asks, almost disbelieving, his voice so childlike that you start laughing even harder. "look at the deck! it's half the size that it was."
and then he's standing up and inspecting you, sticking his hands up your sleeves and finding dozens of cards hiding there, falling onto the floor.
gojo gasps in outrage, but it doesn't even matter to you.
everyone else is clutching their stomachs and gojo begins to pout. "you're all traitors," he's saying, and "how long have you been doing that?" and you almost can't breathe--
so yeah. you don't really mind these kinds of nights. and you don't complain about the messes gojo and his friends leave behind.
*
you shouldn't have given suguru your number. this much is obvious.
but, to be fair, you weren't exactly thinking when you were talking to him about a self-help book you'd picked up, and he was mentioning a podcast, and then he was taking your phone and putting himself in it--which, in itself, should not be dangerous--telling you that he'd send you a link and that you should let him know if you liked it, and that was that.
and really, there shouldn't be any repercussions to this. suguru is your sort of friend, and sort of friends can text on occasion.
except for the fact that he's also satoru gojo's friend. so when you wake up at ten--silently thanking yourself for taking a day off before a week of back-to-back classes and work--he's already texted you, and it's obvious that you failed somewhere in life.
maybe when you accidentally invited a demon into your house and allowed him to stay.
from suguru :p :
hey satoru is supposed to be in class right now and he won't answer me
can you please kick him awake?
but maybe it wasn't a mistake. because at least you have a good excuse to give gojo a bruise.
so you creep down the hall, reluctantly knocking on his door even though it ruins the element of surprise (you're not a monster) and listening as there's no response.
gojo must be asleep. or dead. honestly, you might've killed him in your sleep--wouldn't be the first time.
so you peek the door open, realizing now that you haven't been in his room since he moved in, and watch as a figure slithers under the covers almost before you notice. gojo is completely covered except for the foot he's left hanging off of the side of the bed.
"get up," you tell him, looking around at the sparse decorations he's put up. there are books, candy wrappers, and socks all over the floor, but it's not the messiest room you've ever seen. which is slightly surprising, considering all that you know about gojo.
he whines from under the cover, turning so you get a view of exposed skin on his back. "sleeping," he says as if you might believe him.
so you creep over trash and textbooks and pull the blanket right off of him.
gojo is already looking at you, pouting. his hair is in his eyes and his mouth is puffy--probably from kissing his pillow in his sleep. "what if i was naked under here?" he asks you, very seriously. "i don't let just anyone see that, you know?"
"you're wearing the same silk pajamas you wear every night."
he tries to pull the blanket away from you, his fingers peeling yours away. he huffs. "it's the principle. you don't just wake a man up from slumber."
you snort. "did you travel a century in your sleep?"
"yes, now go away." and then he falls back into the blankets, his words muffled.
"you have class, your highness. i've been sent to fetch you."
one eye appears from under the blanket. "how do you know my schedule?"
"telepathy. now get up."
"i can't," gojo fake coughs. "i'm sick."
"suguru said you'd say that."
he groans, turning over and muffling a few explicit words that sound like a curse upon his best friend.
you poke his back. "did you sleep through your alarm?"
he doesn't answer. his body has gone limp like you might not notice that he's there if he stays still for long enough. so you pull his hair, turning his head towards you. "you're not usually this whiny in the morning," you tell him.
"why are you so mean to me?"
you hum, pretending to consider it. "i think it's the hair. i find it pretentious."
"i could sue you. discrimination is very serious. i've got a good lawyer, too."
"i'll sue back for mental damages."
he laughs, and wiggles from your grasp.
you sigh and finally sit down at the edge of his bed, observing the lollipops he's left lying on his bedside table. gojo's bones seem to crack as he sits up with you, moaning the whole way.
you're silently observing him--with his slightly red eyes and heinous mouth. you're not used to seeing him like this in the morning; usually, he's chipper and annoying. when he walks into the kitchen in the morning you half expect him to start singing.
but this gojo is tired. he rubs at his eyes. "did suguru text you?"
"yup."
"he's a terrible friend."
you nudge him, almost like an agreement. "why aren't you in class?"
"what's even the point of going? it's not like i get a reward."
"i think the reward is graduating, but you might have to fact-check that one."
he nudges you back and then takes your hand. his fingertips are soft as they trace the tendons and veins he can see on your skin. his hands are softer than you'd have expected. his eyes are wary as they look towards the floor, his mouth twisting in displeasure. but he doesn't stop touching you, he does so idly that you almost don't notice. "i have an a in the class," he tells you, "and i already know most of the material so why would i go to every lecture?"
maybe it's the way he says it; so sure and nonchalant, in his typical over-dramatic fashion. maybe it's just that he's never mentioned any of his classes to you, or the fact that he's taking any. maybe he's just crazy--that's the most likely option--but you're suddenly curious.
"what class is it?"
"theoretical physics."
you whistle, shaking your head. "and you already know most of it?"
gojo drops your hand and looks at you. his eyes are wide. maybe he's just realized that he's been talking to you this whole time. "when i was a kid my, uh, my dad had a bunch of textbooks in his office that i used to read through every time i got in trouble," he grins, "which was a lot."
"i can imagine."
"well, it turns out you can only read something so many times before it becomes ingrained in your brain."
you pull at his bedsheet. "do you have a test today, or something?"
"no, suguru just thinks i'm lazy."
you laugh, because he is. gojo rolls his eyes at you so you don't say it. you're a little bit surprised, actually. you knew that gojo wasn't stupid (or at least, you might've known) but there's something about the proof of it. like you can't just read right through him. like maybe there's still more to learn about your roommate and maybe there always has been.
or maybe you're just tired, and he's always had the strange ability to draw irrationality out of you. and also he's an idiot.
"i just..." he starts and his smile fades, but only a little bit. he keeps a layer on while he peels a layer off. "i mean, i like the class. math is cool. but i just don't feel like it today, you know?"
and there's something about his voice as he says it. steady and true, as always, but softer. but compeltely honest.
and you've heard him complain about a million things, like every time you and suguru talk about something he doesn't understand or when the door isn't unlocked when he gets home, or when you won't add his one shirt to your laundry. you've heard every whine and every groan come from his lips.
but he's not complaining about this. just confiding.
and there's such a drastic difference that it takes you a moment to respond.
but you do eventually. "yeah, i know," you tell him and rest a hand on his thigh to squeeze.
and the way that gojo looks at you after--like you might just be saying it to make him feel better--is perplexing. his eyes are blue and maybe you've just noticed this--just started to realize that you're actually sitting with him like a normal person. and that he actually looks grateful.
you shake your head, willing yourself to look away, because maybe there is something sort of magnetic about your roommate. and it feels impossible to only have noticed this now. to realize how warm he is next to you, and how your muscles tense up when he shifts. gojo is looking at you, and it might be the first time.
so you stand up, flicking his chin. "i'll tell suguru that you're puking your guts up."
"really?"
"yup. but next time you sleep through a class i'm going to wake you up by pouring ice water on your face."
he grins. "cruel."
"and i'll record it."
you step over candy wrappers and dirty socks as you leave his room, and as soon as the door is closed you sigh in relief. you're probably better off never opening that door again.
*
it's a ridiculously cold night when he shows up.
you're sitting at the front desk in the library, pretending to study for a mid-term, and trying to smile at the fifth lost library card you've heard about tonight. you got this job at the beginning of the year, and it pays horribly. but at least you can sit around and study, most weekends it's quiet enough to take a nap, and no one tends to bother you when you're drooling all over the reception desk.
most weekends, that is, because as soon as he walks in through the door--letting in air so brisk that it has the potential to kill you--it gets significantly louder.
because satoru gojo is not affected by trivial things such as snow, or blizzards, or the fact that the library is supposed to close in less than ten minutes...
still, you don't really notice him--a rare circumstance that you will question later that night--until he's right next to you, breathing in your ear.
"slacking on the clock?" he asks, and just for a moment, you almost disembowel him with the pen you're holding in your hand.
but then you grunt, used to this sort of intrusion from your roommate, and push his head away. "how did you find me?" you ask him, because, honestly, this job is just an escape from his neverending antics at your house (no, it doesn't matter that you got the job before you knew that such an annoying person could possibly exist).
"i microchipped you in your sleep," gojo says, smoothly, sitting in the chair right next to yours, swiveling around. "i thought i told you about that?"
you blatantly look at the clock and ignore him. "you know that the library closes in seven minutes?"
"...and?"
"so go torment someone else," you answer, standing up with a stack of fileable papers, "i'm busy until eight."
"i'll help," gojo says, eager as always, and takes half of your stack. "where to?"
it is from two months of experience that you know he will not leave you alone. even if you chew off his fingernails and keep them to make into necklaces, gojo will follow you around as long as you make it clear you don't want him to.
so you walk towards the copying room, smiling at all of the sleep-deprived students you pass by and rolling your eyes when gojo does the same.
"how did you even find the library?"
gojo walks like he has absolutely no equilibrium; knocking into you every couple of steps, and then falling in the other direction. it must be a consequence of all of his strenuous leaning.
so he bumps into you as he replies, "tracker," like it's obvious.
you snort. "no, seriously. i didn't think you knew that libraries existed. aren't you allergic to reading?"
"hey!" he tries to trip you. "i'll have you know that i am very studious. top of my class."
"that's why you pay suguru to write your papers for you, right?"
gojo makes a small noise in the back of his throat. "he doesn't write them," he grumbles. "well, not all of them."
you snort and open a door for him to follow through.
"my study group meets here on wednesdays," gojo answers, finally.
"you're a part of a study group?"
"where do you think i go all of the time?"
you briefly consider this, setting the papers down. "cemeteries to mourn all of the people you've annoyed to death, probably. or your girlfriend's house." you shrug.
gojo sets his stack on top of yours, diligently lining them up. "i don't do that every night," he drawls, rolling his eyes. and then he winks at you. "and i don't have a girlfriend. thanks for asking."
you mess up his stack and turn away from him. "sorry, i meant girlfriends as in plural. girlfriends."
"nope, again."
gojo follows closely behind you as you begin to lock up all of the spare rooms, turning off lights and looking for any lost items. "commitment issues?" you ask, fake sympathy clouding your voice.
"sweetheart, if you want me, then just say that. you don't need to pretend to worry about anyone else." his cockiness is infuriating, but you don't even bother to scold him for it. you turn towards him with sharp eyes.
"do i seem worried to you?"
"no, but you're a bad actor," gojo hums, fingertips grazing along your skin as he inspects your face. "denial is serious. you might want to see a doctor."
"you would know," you answer, glaring and pulling away from him. the two of you walk as people begin to trek out of the library, no longer held captive by the idea of studying.
gojo is much too close, as usual, his sweater brushing against yours.
"how'd you even know i was here?" you ask him, after a minute of silence.
"please," he answers, grinning down at you. "i got a PI as soon as you gave me my key."
you squint. "did you actually?"
he laughs. "no. you told shoko, and shoko told me..."
you nod, clearing the desk of your things, tossing your bag at gojo for him to carry. "so why are you here?"
he clears his throat, unplugging the cord to your computer and wrapping it around his hand. "i was walking by, and i thought i'd see if you wanted to come with me for drinks after your shift."
"drinks?" you repeat, taking the cord from his hands.
"flip night."
you groan. "i am never participating in that again after what happened last time."
"it wasn't that bad."
"i had to drag you home and you almost threw up in my hair."
gojo smiles. "consider yourself lucky."
you push him out of the way and put your coat on. then you turn off the lights and push in all of the chairs, gojo not helping at all. "i didn't even get my drink," you remind him.
"okay, so let me make it up to you."
and his voice is a bit different. still arrogant, naturally, still smiling and easy--but maybe he means it? maybe beneath his, frankly, soft exterior, he feels bad for getting drunk before you could? maybe he's not actually a complete monster?
you laugh that thought away as soon as it comes.
you sigh. "are your friends going to be there?"
"yes, our friends are. they suggested i invite you."
you sigh--again, because the air is quite thin when gojo is around--and consider it. for just four seconds. but eventually, you shake your head. "i can't," you tell him, looping your arm around his so you can drag him out of the building.
"why not?"
"i'm tired, and i still need to study for a test on monday..."
"do it in the morning."
you give him a blank look. "i won't want to study if i'm hungover."
"then don't study."
you let go of his arm, shivering from the cold. gojo, of course, is not wearing a jacket, or even a little bit bothered by the air. "you're a terrible influence."
he grins. "i get it from you."
you shake your head, keeping the smile off of your face. "maybe some other time? when it's not freezing, and i don't have a big test?"
gojo looks like he wants to argue with you some more--which he usually does--but eventually, his grin ebbs into something simple and he nods. "okay, but you have to come next time i ask."
"no. what if i'm sick, or something?" you definitely would not put it past him to ask you as a method of torture.
"that's what alcohol is for." he sticks out his hand, too big and too sly.
but you relent, shaking with him, and rolling your eyes.
"okay, gojo. have fun. do not wake me up when you get home."
and you turn to walk away, but his hand catches your wrist. "what are you doing?" he asks, brow furrowed.
"...going home?"
he lets go of you and flicks your forehead. "you're not walking back by yourself," he says, like it's a crime. "c'mon."
and he falls into pace with you, even with his longer legs and fervent energy.
"this is stupid--" you start to complain, but gojo reaches for the strap of your bag, sliding it off of your shoulder. he then slings it on his own, and pulls you in a bit closer by the hem of your jacket.
he doesn't say anything, just shoves your hand in his pocket, and whistles as he walks you home.
*
its a couple of weeks later when you're standing at the door again, trying not to open it more than necessary.
but, really, how wide is too wide? will a half-opened door signal any longing? will he think that you want him back if you open it more than three inches to pass him his box of stuff that he'd left behind and take your key back?
how do you navigate the trade-off of a frog statue that will probably haunt your dreams till the end of time?
"key," you say, without any pleasantries, not bothering to even really look at him.
even though he looks just the same, your ex. still the lying cheater you'd almost fallen in love with.
is it wrong to miss his netflix password more than him?
"thanks," he says, and you've probably been standing there with him for thirty seconds when a head appears on your shoulder.
white hair gets in your eyes, and you try to push gojo away, but he's already intruded on this exchange and you know he's not going to leave.
"go away," you tell him, not very softly.
"hello," gojo holds his hand out over your shoulder, because, again, he is ridiculously tall. "i'm--"
"key," you say again, swatting his hand away.
your ex looks at your new roommate--with all of his charm and irritating sunglasses and perfectly shaped teeth--with obvious disdain. you want to push both of them out the door and live here by yourself forever, but unfortunately, living prices disagree.
so you grab the key from his hand, give him a bland smile, and slam the door with gojo's fingers still in between.
he pulls them back just in time, still almost on top of you, and smiles when you turn around with a scowl. "a friend of yours?" he asks, slyly. he's about as subtle as a third-grader.
"no."
he messes with your hair idly, pretending to fix it. "i noticed an obvious absence where our dancing frog used to be."
"i told you, that's not mine."
"so you gave it away?"
you cross your arms. he is far too close to you. "you told me it was hideous."
"it was," he nods, vehemently, and you know his eyes are grinning at you behind those dark shades. "but now there's an empty spot on that shelf."
"we can put your tongue there when i cut it out," you give him an innocent smile and walk past him to sit on the couch. your pocket burns with the key you put there, metal like an obvious stain on your skin.
it's not that you care about him anymore, really. you don't, not even when you lay alone at night and think about him. it's more that... he doesn't think about you. he didn't, and he wouldn't have, even if you were still together.
is it wrong to be wanted by someone whose opinion is worth about as much to you as a penny you could or could not pick up on the street? should you crave being cared about by someone as awful as him?
you want to throw his key in bleach. maybe take a dip yourself.
gojo follows you, throwing himself down on the couch, and brushing you as he does so. he is very used to this kind of proximity, and the annoyed look you give him. "so that was your ex?"
"yes."
there's a brief pause, and a nice person might leave it like that. might try to console you, tell you better off. but satoru gojo is not nice, and he probably never has been. "really?" he asks. then clicks his tongue.
you interrupt whatever obnoxious statement is supposed to follow: "if you're about to say that there are a lot of more eligible bachelors, including yourself, then i'm going to say that you should probably make a zillow account."
gojo pinches your thigh. "i would never say something like that."
you look at him, just barely able to make out the shape of his eyes when he's this close. "you told me that last week when i was complaining about dating apps."
"well, it was true then."
you roll your eyes.
"i wasn't going to say that anyway."
you hum, relaxing into the hold his legs begin to have on yours. despite his abrupt and terrible personality, gojo is very warm. and he's already intruded into so much of your space--your home, your head--that it almost feels normal.
with his thighs pushing against yours and his fingertips trailing up the back of your neck.
you should slap him away, but you don't.
the last person you cuddled with was the same man who gave you the greasy key in your pocket.
you look at gojo with inquisitive eyes. "really? no bad pickup line? you were going to say something meaningful?"
"would've blown your mind, but you interrupted..." he teases, and pulls on a strand of baby hair.
"whatever will i do now?"
his hand falls from your neck, and if you weren't as comfortable as you are currently, you might think about what he's doing.
like the fact that you haven't even questioned this, or his following you around, or the fact that he knew you needed someone to pull you away from that door.
you don't think about that, but maybe you should.
still, his hand wraps around your shoulder, and you slump against him without question.
"i was..." his voice is softer, calmer than you've maybe ever heard it. it should jolt you away from him. it should do anything but keep you planted on the couch right next to him. "i was just going to say that i'm glad he's an idiot."
"getting turned on by my pain?"
he laughs. "no, but, i mean, your pain my gain."
you don't even notice it when he slips off his glasses, his fingers curling around your forearm.
"where else would i find a roommate that threatens me with bodily harm?" he asks, right in your ear.
it's true enough, you guess. and at least for a moment, you don't want to rip off his arms.
and gojo mutters something that sounds like "stupid," but you aren't listening.
*
gojo has called in your agreement; that is the only reason you're sitting at the bar, watching him dance around with shoko--purposefully stepping on her toes--and sipping on some drink he ordered for you.
it's terribly sweet and reminds you of lotion but you drink it anyway. it's not like you bought it, and you're sure that gojo wont buy you anything else until finish it. plus it's giving you a light buzz, just enough to feel comfortable sitting there, and not like you want to run away.
it's not as busy as it was last time, the music slightly quieter, the air in the room less stiff. gojo seems less energized tonight--considering that he hasn't abandoned any of you to talk to the houseplant in the corner--even with the dancing.
which he is terrible at. it's like watching an eight-month-old learn how to stand. or a man trying to impress absolutely no one. his limbs move like they aren't even attached to his body.
"is he drunk?" you're asking suguru and nanami--who have been sitting there longer than you have. "i didn't see him order anything."
nanami laughs and suguru ruffles your hair. "that's satoru completely sober."
"...are you sure?"
"yeah, he doesn't usually drink. even that," he nods to your drink which you're sipping with a wince, "is too bitter for him."
you raise a brow, watching shoko frown at him, and then nudge him away. "he drank last time i came, though?"
suguru nods, looking away like he knows something you don't and nanami snorts.
"what?"
"he was nervous last time," nanami answers. he's got less than a smile on, but it's better than the frowns you've observed sitting next to him in class.
your brow furrows. "about what?"
suguru is about to answer, nudging nanami not very subtly, when the very topic of conversation pops up, bumping into you as he squeezes himself in between you and suguru. his presence is an interruption in itself, but he's smiling like he always does, acting like he's been there the whole time.
you might've pushed him away a week or two ago. now you just sigh and move a little so he can fit.
"did you miss me, sweetheart?" he asks you, leaning against suguru. "don't worry, i'll dance with you next."
"no, and i don't dance."
gojo rolls his eyes. "everyone dances."
you look pointedly between him and the group of people dancing in the middle of the room. an image of him almost tripping over shoko makes you smile. "well some people shouldn't."
suguru laughs and gojo grins even wider at you--his hair is slightly sweaty and his eyes are peering at you over the glasses sitting on the edge of his nose. "let's test that theory," he says, taking a step back. his tone is nothing less than suggestive. and his fingers wiggle towards you, beckoning for you to follow.
there's a twinge in your stomach and you adjust in your seat, frowning at him. "i told you that i don't dance."
"well, i do. and you owe me for last time."
you balk. "owe you for what? making sure you didn't get murdered on the street?"
gojo pouts, his face so unserious and completely genuine at the same time. "you made me dance all alone. you didn't even come watch."
"you left me--"
"just one dance?" he asks, leaning in towards you. his eyes are sparkling. "i'll get you another drink."
"you'll get me that anyway."
"i'll let you pick it this time."
"that's usually expected, you know?"
he ignores that, "c'mon," he pleads, "you know that you want to."
"i don't know that, actually."
and then someone coughs behind gojo and you realize that your friends have been listening to this entire interaction and that you'd completely forgotten they were there. how long has he been standing like that? just two inches away from your face?
"just go, y/n," shoko says, "put the rest of us out of our misery. i've been listening to him whine all night."
"hey--" gojo turns, his voice defensive.
but you take another sip of your drink, sighing as you stand up. "fine," you tell him, rolling your eyes when he turns to you with a smile. "one dance, and you can't ask me for anything else tonight."
his teeth are like rows of knives. sharp and inviting. "okay."
he holds his hand out for you again, and you take it, feeling that strange pull in the pit of your stomach.
it's probably just the alcohol, though.
*
you don't know how long you've been dancing with gojo.
it started with one dance where he didn't do anything except twirl you around and sway with you, like he'd accepted the fact that you weren't exactly light on your feet, singing along to the music in your ear, making snide remarks about where you'd placed your hands. moving them like pieces on a chess board.
his breath was hot on your ear. condensation on a glass.
and then you'd gradually moved to letting him lead you, after who knows how many songs, following his steps and not apologizing when your foot slammed against his, or when you bumped shoulders with him, probably creating marks on your skin.
and then his hands were on your hips, his chin resting against your shoulder, and it felt almost nice to be dancing with him. almost relaxing to forget momentarily about where you were and who you were with. it shouldn't surprise you that you're comfortable with him, but it does. there's no worry about the way you're looking at him or if anyone is watching the two of you--but then again, you might be slightly drunk.
gojo hasn't commented on how long the two of you have been dancing, and evidently, you've let the alcohol sway you into staying for more than just another song.
so now, with his lips on your ear, you're almost smiling into him. your heart is fast, and the adrenaline rush you're experiencing is a pleasant thing; if someone ripped out your heart right you wouldn't even notice.
"see?" gojo says, his voice just a murmur with all of the music swimming in your ears. "you're not so bad."
it sounds like something else to you.
"you won't be saying that in the morning," you tell him, stepping on his toes, but he doesn't pull back or move too quickly. if you thought rationally about his movements you might notice that everything he's doing is slow; like you're an animal he's trying not to scare.
"i'm used to it," he pulls back a little bit. "shoko does that too."
"'cause you deserve it."
he laughs and leans in, so you follow him.
are you just swaying now? or is he leading you in something more complex? a dance you've never heard of, or a simple in and out?
you don't know, and you really don't care.
after a moment, you sigh. "i've never danced with anyone before," you whisper to him, almost like not saying the words at all. it might be a lie, you're not quite sure.
your words are just thoughts now with no sort of intervention between your brain and your mouth. intoxication fills your lungs.
"really?"
"mhm," you hum, "no one's ever asked me."
"i don't believe you," his voice might be teasing, or serious, or he might be barking at you.
you laugh anyway. gojo's hands are firm against your skin. he feels kind of hazy, like a dream. so you laugh again.
"you okay?"
"i think i might be a little drunk."
he snorts, his breath short. "really? i didn't think you'd be a lightweight."
"you're a lightweight."
"yeah, but you already knew that. i only drink when we come here, anyway. nanami doesn't like having to drag me home."
"you're heavy," you agree, looking up at him. you can see his eyelashes from under his glasses. you can see his tongue as he moves it, and the tip of his nose. you can almost feel it when he swallows.
"sorry," he teases. his face looks different under these lights. it looks different when you're looking at him this close.
"you're kinda pretty," the words fall from your mouth as you think them, and you grin. "huh."
it shouldn't be an odd realization, but it is. his skin is almost translucent, and his mouth is sinful. his eyes are wide and bright and satoru gojo could be a sculpture if he wasn't a man.
gojo looks down at you, his brows raised. "you just noticed?"
"i don't look at you a lot."
"oh, please," he shakes his head. "i've caught you staring."
"i only stare when i'm worried that you're a robot planted by aliens or something. you say weird things."
he laughs, and his hands squeeze your waist. he could stab you in the back right now and it wouldn't even matter. you're not even worried about it. he could flirt with you all night and you don't think you'd quite mind.
you giggle at the thought, heart beating fast with every breath that comes from him.
"what?"
"you're not a bad roommate, you know?" you ask him, but maybe you're asking yourself.
"i'm not?"
"no. you're actually... kinda considerate. my old roommate--my ex--he never wanted to go anywhere with me. he wouldn't have asked me to dance."
"why not?"
"i think he thought i was stuck up. or embarassing. or not worth it," you breathe, almost airly, the words are true but they don't matter to you. not like this, pressed up against him. "i don't know."
gojo's brow furrows. "how?"
your brows furrow. "how what?"
"how could he think you're not worth it?" he repeats, and you laugh back. because it's a joke.
"you'd have to ask him."
"i don't think i'll ever be talking to him," he answers, voice rough. "it wouldn't be good for either of us. and i don't trust people with such terrible taste."
you giggle at the thought of the frog sculpture, the disgusted look on gojo's face. you can almost see through him.
"you shouldn't," you answer, not even thinking.
there's a moment where the room is quiet, everyone inhaling at the same time, and then exhaling. you feel like you fit here, somehow. like everything is moving at just the right place. this silence is a comforting feeling, the bubbles bursting in your stomach reiterating it.
"hey," gojo says, interrupting that feeling.
"what?"
"you're a good roommate, too. you're not stuck up. or embarassing."
"i'm not?"
he smiles at you. "well, you're a little mean."
you smile back. "only to you, satoru."
his face drops, but you don't notice. you lean against his chest again, your eyes fluttering shut. if you were focused enough, you could feel his heartbeat. but you don't. and you don't watch as he swallows. as his voice falters, for only a single second.
but you do look at him when he says, "my friends like you."
"they do?"
he laughs, pushing his sunglasses back up on his face. "wasn't it obvious?"
you shake your head. you're not sure how long you've been standing with him, or if it even matters. you're not even sure if you're still in the bar, or your bed, being covered with your blanket, tucked in by gentle hands.
how long has it been now?
"i like you too," gojo whispers, "just so you know."
and you could be at home, with your roommate. you could be right next to him. it doesn't matter, because you only whisper, "good," and then it's all gone.
*
when you wake up the next morning, gojo is already laughing at you.
your headache is a curse. your mind is in shambles. and your body aches with the manipulation of only one person.
you hate your roommate and his terrible taste in drinks and that he doesn't even say anything when you slump against the counter, not even bothering to make fun of you or complain about how terrible you are when you're drunk.
he just smiles easily, ruffling your hair.
and when he starts to cook some bacon in the pan, you don't say anything, but you go and stand next to him, letting him hold you up.
there are no words. only the popping of oil in a pan.
and that feeling, of course. because it wasn't the alcohol.
*
so maybe satoru gojo is your friend. you will not admit this to anyone aloud, but you concede a little bit in your head, because it's a fragile place there, and you're a terrible liar.
and so maybe you hang out with him sometimes.
it's not just the game nights or study sessions anymore. you sit on the couch and play with your phone and he sits down next to you. he'll rub your feet, or massage your legs and you let him.
only because he's kinda good at it, of course.
and sometimes you'll turn on a movie and he'll appear out of nowhere, complaining about whatever you picked, but laying down nonetheless. and after several minutes he'll move closer to you, resting his head on your thigh. and you might play with his hair, but only because it's unreasonably soft.
and some mornings when you wake up and make yourself breakfast, not even trying to be quiet, you'll make a little extra. but it's not for him, it's just a coincidence.
and he stops by the library on his way home from suguru's, or some girl's house, and the two of you will walk home together, talking about class, or the weather, or whatever gojo wants. you let him do this, because it's usually dark outside, and you don't like walking home alone.
and if he barges into your room sometimes--obviously not knocking--you only complain a little bit. and then you let him lay in your bed and mess with your things.
but only because it's the easier option, of course.
and you've missed the feeling of having someone near. and satoru gojo is easy to be around.
*
"gojo," you gasp, as soon as the door opens in your face. and then you scowl. "don't you knock?"
he pushes you so he can move past, raising a brow at you. "i live here." his hands are empty, and he's not wearing a coat again. just a weird button-up probably more expensive than your share of the rent. how he's survived over two decades, you're not sure.
your brows furrow at him. "well, you could give some warning if you're going to kick open the door. what if you broke my nose?"
"well, why were you standing right in front of the door when i kicked it?" gojo mimics, flicking you away, then looking down to your hands where your wallet and keys are piled up. "you going somewhere?"
"to the store."
"it's eleven."
"why thank you for that update, gojo. i really appreciate it," and then you move beside him to open the door.
but gojo grabs your hand, making sure to roll his eyes at you where you can see it, and pulls you away so he can step in front of the door. "what could you need from the store right now?"
"i need stuff."
he crosses his arms, uncharacteristically stern. "like what?"
"stuff. girl stuff. you wouldn't get it."
he gasps, mouth dropping. "oh no, did i steal too many of your tampons again?"
"first of all, that's against the apartment rules, so you better hope not. second of all, please move," you glare at him. "i need to hurry."
"you can't leave right now."
"i believe there's such a thing as free will..." you try and push him away, but he doesn't budge. "and you're not the boss of me."
"it's too late for you to walk to the store. go tomorrow."
you cross your arms. "when have i ever listened to you?" you ask him, feeling that familiar irritation crawl up your skin.
but then gojo is pulling your arms apart and resting them at your sides and saying "stop that," as a gentle chide. and that irritation molds. you push his hands away.
you want to push his hands off of the edge of the earth just so that he'll never touch you again.
"seriously, gojo, i need to go. they close at midnight."
"you can't walk to the store by yourself in the dark."
"i can do whatever i want."
"then i'm locking you in your room until tomorrow. you're grounded."
you poke his shoulder. you can't decide if he's serious or not. his voice is always teasing, and you can't see enough of his eyes. and you can't trust a single thing he says. "when did you become so overbearing?" you ask him, trying not to grind your teeth.
"when i realized how weak you are."
"weak?" you balk at him. "i'm not weak. please retract that sentence before i accidentally punch you."
"you can't even push me away from the door. i'll take my chances with your fists."
"that's because you're irritating me," you tell him, as you try to do it again. "anger distracts me."
he laughs at you, leaning even further against the door.
"gojo," you whine, trying to pinch him away instead. "stop being an ass. just get out of the way."
he holds a hand to his chest, offended. "i am showing concern about your safety," he claims, shaking his head at you.
"you are ruining my mood."
"oh, good."
you scowl. "move. right now."
"that was very intimidating," he grins at you, "but maybe try again."
you groan and try to stab him with your key, which he pushes away, still smiling, still completely the worst.
"i--" you sigh, "i don't like you very much."
he snorts.
then you pout at him, fluttering your eyelashes. "please, gojo. i'll be back in fifteen minutes."
"what is that?"
you frown. "what?"
"what's wrong with your face?"
you throw your arms up, shaking your head. then you mutter another thing about hating him under your breath and finally turn away. you set your keys and your wallet on the counter, pouting as you sit down on the couch.
gojo is there a moment later, laughing at you. "was that supposed to be convincing?"
"don't talk to me. ever again."
you shake your head, fed up with him and everything about this living situation. how are you locked in your apartment right now?
gojo tilts his head back, and then pauses for a moment.
"then how am i supposed to ask if you want to come with me to the store?" he asks, nonchalantly. "i need some stuff."
and you should be angry at him--you should probably break one of his fingers or cut his hair off in his sleep. you should tell him that you hate his company and that if he ever tells you what to do again--
but instead, you jump up from the couch, smiling at him. "let's go," you say, quickly, before you change your mind.
and you don't get to see it when gojo smiles back at you, softly.
*
"hey," he whispers, "you shouldn't sleep here."
gojo is shaking your shoulder gently, his breath on your face, his voice soft--even in the haze of disrupted sleep. there's a warm feeling in your belly as he speaks to you, an unknowing smile on your face.
"hmm?" you answer, trying to remember who you are and why you're here. who he is.
"it's almost midnight. what are you doing on the couch?" gojo is helping you sit up. his hands are ridiculously warm, and you don't think about how nice they feel on the bare skin of your back.
"gojo?"
he laughs. "the one and only. c'mon, i'll tuck you in."
"did you just get home?" you must still be sleeping, because his hands are so soft right now. and his voice is so quiet--like the creaking of an old house.
"yeah. are you going to get up?" he's kneeling in front of you, and his face is bare. you almost want to laugh at how bright his hair is even in the dark.
"where were you?"
he shakes his head, smiling up at you, and moves from the floor. "c'mon, sit up," he beckons, trying to get you to move your head from its place. you wince. eventually, he gives up and your heart almost disappears when he picks you up, tapping your legs so that you'll wrap them around his waist.
you do it, but only because you don't want to fall.
"why are you so tall?" you complain as he carries you to your room, feeling much more awake when you're this high in the air.
gojo snorts. "i'll take that as a thank you," he whispers in your ear and sets you on your bed. then he sits on the edge and takes your socks off, pulling the covers out from under you. his movements are slow as he covers every inch of skin he can see, his breath the only sound between the two of you.
it's colder when his hands move, and he looks at you for a moment as if trying to make sure he's satisfied with his job.
"are you going to make fun of me for this in the morning?"
gojo grins, squeezing your leg as he stands up. "probably. but only a little."
"okay," you yawn, blinking as he backs up towards the door.
"night, sweetheart," he whispers to you, and then a flash of hair is all you see before your door is closed and you drift back to sleep.
and in the morning you wake up and can't remember how you got in bed. gojo doesn't say a thing.
*
satoru gojo can say so much without saying a single thing.
when he burst into your room--surprising you because you hadn't realized he was home--throwing himself on your bed and mumbling something about hating his life, you didn't say a word.
and he'd sat there for ten minutes while you typed out a paper on your laptop, glancing over to him every couple of minutes, slightly worried because he hadn't moved an inch.
you've seen a lot of his moods recently. you've seen him excited about some movie you didn't understand, exhausted after a long day of classes, angry when suguru and you leave him out of a joke. but most of that, you assume, is just him being himself. every feeling he has is probably seven times larger than the average person's.
but now that he's groaning into your bed, you can tell, just from the way his body deflates, that there's something wrong. you could see it when he walked in the room, and felt it because he'd told you he was getting dinner with his parents tonight.
but if you know one thing about him, it's that he won't talk about it if you ask.
because after a couple of weeks of spending more and more time with him, you'd quickly realized that you didn't actually know much about his life. he doesn't tell any stories about his childhood, or high school years--minus the ones that he tried to suffocate suguru for letting slip. he doesn't mention his parents much, and when he does, it's nothing but the bare minimum. he mentions classes so offhandedly that you hadn't even known how extensive his studies were until suguru was teasing him about an award he'd gotten a couple of years ago.
he could talk to you for hours on end, but he wouldn't say anything.
so after realizing this, you'd resorted to asking suguru about it.
that night, gojo was asleep on the floor between your feet. his hand was under his head, and he was snoring loud enough for you to notice. you'd sat down to watch a movie with him after he'd claimed that you and suguru were losers for being tired at this hour and that he was the youngest of you all.
suguru only smiled a little bit at your question.
"satoru keeps an infinite amount of space between him and everyone else," he'd said softly, into the warm air of your apartment. "even with me, and i've known him since we were kids. his family..." he trailed off, shaking his head.
you'd frowned. "what?"
"he's always been too much for them, in a way. i mean, you know, he is too much most of the time. but he does all of it purposefully; the arrogance, the bravado. i don't know... i think he just wants to control whatever image everyone has of him. to the extent that his personality is based on pushing people away, just so he can figure out who's actually going to stick around."
you'd watched him then, with his fluttering eyelashes--his sunglasses lying on the ground next to him--and his bright hair. the gentle movement of his lips as he dreamt. he was softer like this, less forceful, less of a burden, and more of a boy.
and beautiful, of course, but that's an offhanded thought you wouldn't acknowledge.
"so, he doesn't talk to you about--" the words felt wrong, and you almost felt guilty for talking about him like this, with his best friend. but still. "--important stuff?"
"he talks to me about a lot of things. but, no, not really. i get a long-winded rant sometimes, but not often."
"then how are you supposed to know anything about him?"
suguru smiled at you, looking between you and gojo like there was a secret he didn't want to tell. he sighed. "satoru doesn't really tell me any of the important stuff because we've known each other for so long. i understand how his family is because i've watched him deal with them. i can guess how he's feeling based on his expression. but for people he hasn't known as long, like you, getting to know him is like i-spy."
suguru didn’t need to elaborate. you got it.
like trying to find little hints of him hidden between all of the mess. you'd snorted and agreed.
and it feels even more true now, with him cowering in your blankets. but still, you say nothing.
you get it, to a certain degree. vulnerability was one of the feelings you liked to push away; secrets were only supposed to be coveted by you. getting close to people was a dangerous thing, risky in its own way.
but, thinking that gojo doesn't trust you--couldn't trust you... it's more irritating than it should be. and maybe that's just because you're arrogant, and think yourself to be trustworthy. or maybe it's because you trust him, in your own unique way, even with all of his too much and extremeness.
you don't say that to him though, just like he doesn't say anything to you.
"hey," you push him with a foot. "are you drooling on my comforter?"
there's a moment of silence, then gojo rolls over. "not a lot."
you roll your eyes at him and type another sentence--a collection of words that have nothing to do with the actual essay you're writing, naturally--waiting for him to say something else.
and, predictably, he does. "why aren't you paying attention to me?"
"i'm busy, gojo."
"no, you're not."
"i am doing homework."
he looks up at you. his sunglasses are somewhere on your floor. "well, then you're definitely not busy," he grins.
you swat away a hand that tries to steal your computer.
"aren't you supposed to be at dinner?" you ask him, trying to seem like you don't care about the answer.
he sighs again. "canceled."
"why?"
"my dad had a meeting or something."
"oh."
you let the silence wade for a minute or two, trying to be discreet when you watch his face for any signs of discontent. but gojo just has his eyes closed. his hands above his head.
eventually, you nudge him again. "did you eat anything?"
he shakes his head.
"do you want me to make you something?"
an eye opens. he turns over and rests his head on his hands, squinting at you. "are you being nice to me?"
"not intentionally."
he snorts, poking you, almost in awe. "you are."
"i'm just trying to make sure you don't die, okay? who knows what you've eaten today."
he crawls up your bed, sitting right next to you so he can rest his head on your shoulder. and you should push him off, but you don't. "it's okay. i'm not very hungry."
"that's not what i asked."
gojo laughs against you, his hair brushing against your neck.
you shouldn't say anything more. you shouldn't even entertain him and his antics, and you shouldn't even care (but you do. for some, stupid, infuriating reason).
so you look at him, and your voice is soft when you ask, "you okay?" to him, hoping that it doesn't seem too intrusive. wishing that you didn't actually care if he was or not.
gojo's eyes meet yours, and for a brief moment, you get that feeling again.
that feeling in your stomach that makes you want to jump away from him. that makes your hands want to shake, and your voice fade. that feeling that you know--too well, too much--but can't get rid of.
like an itch you're not really supposed to scratch.
gojo swallows. "yeah," he answers, with no grin, no conceit. "i'm okay."
and it shouldn't feel like a relief to hear, but it does. you nod, look away, and go back to your computer. back to your actual life, which shouldn't have any satoru gojo in it.
but a minute later he adds: "i'd be better if you made me dinner, though."
and you pull on his hair a little. you try to pretend like his smile doesn't fill you with butterflies.
*
this shouldn't be happening.
it's the only reasonable thought running through your brain at the moment. the only echo you can discern, the only words you can make out in the jumble of anxiety and horror running through your mind.
he should not be this close.
gojo had only picked you up from work once again, his easy smile meeting yours as soon as he walked through the door--you'd been waiting, wondering when he was going to show up.
at seven-thirty he was there, letting in the cold air and sitting in the seat next to yours, complaining about the fact that you had a job that diverted your attention away from him while you rolled your eyes.
he sat there for the half an hour remaining in your shift, distracting you.
two months ago you would've kicked him out. would've called some make-believe security.
but you just listened while he talked to you about space theories that didn't make any sense.
and then he'd grabbed your bag for you, turning off the lights before you could, pushing in chairs while you organized the reception desk.
and his hand grabbed yours before you thought to notice--swinging along while the two of you began the walk home.
and halfway there, gojo stopped, looking up at something. "hey," he'd poked you. "look at the stars."
you'd done it, begrudgingly, squinting. "i can count, like, three."
"there's at least five."
"why did you stop me to do this? it's cold."
"because they look nice," he argues, looking down at you. "you have no eye for beauty."
and, really, you might've agreed with him. you might've pushed him away from you and told him to hurry up and you might've not cared at all.
but you could see his eyes, just a little bit, behind his sunglasses. and his smile was alabaster, and that feeling--that gasping for breath, trying to hold on to anything feeling--was there again.
and it was poking you. like a push in some direction. like a laugh telling you that you were too afraid to do anything.
you were looking at him. right at his face and the only thing you wanted to say was that he was wrong.
he was wrong because at least you knew that he looked beautiful.
but those words wouldn't leave your lips--that thought couldn't leave your head--so you were only staring at him. wishing that you'd never let him into your apartment and that he hadn't started becoming a person to you.
it wasn't fair like this.
"what?" he whispered, his smile dropping, like he could tell there was something wrong with you. like he knew you that well.
if he'd kept on smiling, you wouldn't have done it. you wouldn't have pushed up on your toes and leaned into him, and you wouldn't have kissed him like you did.
like you're doing.
and it would've been fine because you never would've started this knowing that it would eventually have to stop.
and even though it takes him less than a second to kiss you back--his lips molding to yours like an automatic reaction--you know that you shouldn't be doing this.
that you can't be doing this. not with him. not like this.
so when gojo's hands move to your waist, his breath even in your mouth, you push at his chest. and you want to run away.
"i'm--" you swallow, trying not to taste him, the bubblegum flavor of him, and almost flinch away. "i'm sorry."
gojo's mouth is frozen from where he stands two feet away. his hands are in the air like he doesn't know what to do with them. "you..."
and you've never heard him speechless before. just the idea of it makes you blurt out whatever comes to mind. "i shouldn't have done that," you tell him, and, "i didn't mean to--i don't--" you shake your head. "sorry. i'm sorry. can we forget about this? can we get home because i'm really cold?"
"you kissed me," gojo says, so simply.
the words are another blow to your heart. you were hoping that he wouldn't have noticed.
and wince and watch him, his face as it shifts, moving with each thought in his head.
"gojo, i'm really--"
"no," he interrupts, taking a step towards you.
"what?"
"that's not my name."
you frown. "yes it is?"
he shakes his head. "no, it's satoru. you've said it before, you know. you should keep saying it."
"when have i said it?" you ask, momentarily blinded by how he demands this. who is he to demand anything?
"when you were drunk."
you scoff. "i'm not just going to call you by your first name cause you want me to," you tell him, "who do you think i am?"
and then satoru laughs, shaking his head at you, his grin full-force on his face. "are you serious? you kissed me and now you don't want to call me by my first name?"
you freeze. "i said i was sorry about that," you say, weakly.
you feel like who you've always felt around him. not as easy, not as cool, never as smooth. you feel like a child caught doing something they're not supposed to. you want to run away from him, but he knows where you live.
"you're sorry?"
"i didn't mean to."
he quirks a brow. "you didn't mean to?"
"it was an accident?"
he takes another step closer. "it was an accident?"
"are you just going to keep repeating everything i say?" you ask, voice hard. this must be a dream.
satoru shakes his head at you. "no, but i have a question."
"...okay."
"if i try to kiss you right now, are you going to try and murder me? i know that we're away from the apartment right now, but it would really ruin the mood."
you stare at him.
it must be answer enough because he steps forward and he kisses you again. but this time, it feels less mechanical. his lips are soft and smooth as they push against yours--and he pushes like he's demanding something from you. like he knows more about what you can give than you do.
and he grins against you like he's doing everything exactly right.
but when satoru pulls back, your eyes stay shut. you try and banish the feeling in your stomach from your body, but it doesn't respond to idle threats.
"we shouldn't do this," you whisper to him. you don't open your eyes. you don't want to see his face and fall victim to another one of his schemes.
"why not?"
"the last time i kissed one of my roommates..." you imply, hoping that you don't have to tell him that you're scared.
"oh, right," he brushes some hair from your face. he has not moved an inch away from you. "i forgot that you're experienced."
"wasn't it obvious?"
he laughs, and then nudges your cheek with a finger. "look at me."
you shake your head.
"c'mon, just a little."
his voice is so soft. satoru is whispering like it's just for you. and you've never heard him like this and you don't think you want to see him.
"please, sweetheart?" he asks, one last time, and you have to. if only to put yourself out of your own misery. "good. now listen--"
"don't tell me what to do."
he rolls his eyes. "listen," he repeats. "i know you don't like me very much. and i know that you only keep me around for my rent money and my pretty face--"
you kinda want to hit him.
"--but i've wanted to kiss you for weeks. and i'm not good at the..." he swallows, blinking just briefly. "all of the telling stuff, but i want to be. with you. for you."
you're not sure if that's the end, or if it's the beginning. your eyes are stuck on his smile, and you're not listening to anything he said.
he's very close right now. so accessible. and it's just another reason to want to push him away.
satoru clears his throat, nudging your head with his nose. "and i'm tired of shoko and suguru calling me a coward, so it'd be great if you'd mention that you kissed me first."
your brows furrow. "you told shoko and suguru?"
"i didn't say anything," he almost swears. "they tricked me into admitting it."
"when?"
"...the day after i introduced you to them."
you pull away to observe his face. "really?"
he groans. "stop looking at me like that," he says, "it's mean."
you almost smile at him again. then close your eyes. "okay."
"havent you listened to anything i've said to you?" he asks, rhetorically. "i flirt with you every day."
"you flirt with everything."
"mmm, true," he leans his chin against your head, breathing you in. "now that i've poured my heart out for you, can we go home? it's cold out here, and i'd rather make out on our couch than that bench over there."
"who said anything about making out?"
"please," he wraps an arm around your shoulder, and smiles down at you--with all of the typical swagger--and maybe this time you let him.

Not Letting You Go Easy - Paul Lahote x Fem!Reader
Tumblr media
IM BACKKKKKKK!!! Wow I just checked my last fic and it's been TWO years. Does anyone even remember me? 🥹 I'm back on my twilight bs, this one is my longest ever! Let me know what you think! - 3.2K Words ❤️
*Second Person POV*
The sun poured on your face as you soaked in all the warmth it allowed. You missed the sun, watching the palm trees sway peacefully as the ocean tide rolls in. The goosebumps that arise on your skin as a strong breeze passes, the warmth blanketing back over them.
You keep your eyes shut as your mouth curls up in a smirk, listening faintly to your mom try and convince your sister to stay in Jacksonville. She could offer up the moon and all the stars...Bella would still choose Edward, every time. It's true that you were weary of the vampire, after she flew like a bat out of hell half way across the world to Italy to save him. But could you blame her?
If it wasn't for your sister stumbling her way into the supernatural world, it's possible you could have never met Paul. A blush crept up your cheeks as you crack a full smile, thinking back to the day you met the hot head.
~
There was absolutely zero hesitation when you followed behind Bella in the truck to go to Jacob's. You had been worried for weeks about your sister, who had been spiraling ever since she was ghosted a second time by someone she trusted. Not only did you care about your her, but Jacob too. He had been around your family for years, and this behavior...especially towards Bella...was concerning. So when she frantically barged in your room asking you to go with, you were out of the house in minutes.
You had taken off in a sprint to try and keep up with your sisters manic running towards the group of shirtless men in Jacob's backyard. You heard rumors of the so called "cult" that had formed in the recent weeks. Jacob's haircut and tattoo had confirmed that part. But seeing the others approach through his window, you knew this was going to be a bad idea. You barely had time to catch your breath before her hand came in contact with one of their faces. You let a gasp slip as you made it in time to yank her back by the elbow.
What had gotten into her!?
Not able to process why she would resort to slapping him in the first place, the man, who looked like a carbon copy of the other ones standing around, began to shake violently. The others were urging you both to get back while attempting to calm him down. Never in your life had you witnessed such immense anger. In seconds his shakes became tremors. It was as if he ripped apart, and in his place stood a massive grey wolf. Mirroring the emotions of the man before, the animal was growling, snarling at your sister with its teeth bared.
Your heart was beating out of your chest. You felt as if you were dreaming, blinking rapidly to make sure this was real. Not standing around to question the animal who could very well kill you, Bella grabbed your hand and you both booked it towards the house. The outburst must have woken Jacob, who was running towards the scene. Bellas blood curdling scream was telling him to go back, though he kept charging forward.
You both fell hands first onto the grass as Jacob launched over you both, shreds of clothes flying as yet another wolf emerged.
Now it was you who was shaking. The only thing that prevented you from having a panic attack was realizing that all the other men were calm, as if this happened all the time. You swallowed your fear as you accepted the hand of one of the younger men, who led you two back to the truck by the order of the oldest one.
As you walked into the cozy secluded home, your mind was running a million miles a minute. They were werewolves....as if after learning vampires existed wasnt a shock enough already.
The oldest one, fiancé, Emily, you had learned, helped ease some of the headache. Besides the scar she wore upon her face that made your stomach drop when you first saw her, she was the epitome of kindness. You could see when she was greeted by Sam that their love was far more deep rooted than the mark she wore. Only knowing her for an hour, you felt happy for the girl.
You vaguely registered Jacob returning, finally looking away from the couple when you heard an unfamiliar voice apologize to Bella. As he then turned your way, you both locked eyes. An electric current jolted through your body, through your veins as you held his stare. You felt a fuzzy warm feeling race its way all the way down to your toes. The feeling lasted what felt like forever, until Jacob's "no fucking way...." pulled you back to earth. It's as if you had been some other place. A place of immense happiness and love. You knew you looked as bright as a tomato when you realized all eyes were on the two of you, mortified they caught you staring.
You did a quick scan of the room, noticing they were paying more attention to the man rather than you, who, was still staring.
When you craned your neck to look at Bella behind you, you found relief in that she looked just as confused.
The man was slapped on the back by Embry, which snapped him out of his trance. He quietly introduced himself as Paul. You blushed hard when you quickly said your name back. As if to break the tension in the room, Jacob asked you both to go for a walk.
Before you left, you had sworn you heard Paul growl.
"Not now. She's been through too much today already." Sam lowly said to him. You furrowed your brows as you trailed behind your sister out of the house.
After a walk on the beach and many questions answered, you were able to take a deep breath. The world was getting scary for you, but Jacob seemed to ease your fears, promising he would always protect you both.
Before he dropped you both off at your house, he had mentioned going to a pack bonfire the following night. You couldn't help but get excited at the prospect of seeing Paul again. You both hadn't even spoke other than introductions, but there was some type of spark in your core when you both met.
Attempting to shove it away, you reminded yourself it was nothing but a crush.
~
You sat on a log by the fire, rubbing your hands together in front of it. Everyone was up gathering their food, but you were focused on the warmth as it was more than chilly outside. Nerves bubbled in you as Paul approached, asking to sit next to you. Your cheeks heated as he sat, only inches away.
"I just wanted to apologize about yesterday," he spoke, his voice gruff as he looked into the fire. "You could have gotten hurt and I let my anger get the best of me. I promise I'm not like that all the time, and I don't want you to be afraid of me."
Your heart melted at how softly he spoke. "It's really alright. My sister acts out of impulse, if you couldn't tell." This got him to laugh lightly. You laughed too, until a strong breeze made you break out into a shiver.
Paul immediately noticed, grabbing a blanket from the pile beside him. "Here," he said as he wrapped one around you. His warmth radiated off you as he had gotten closer to do so. Not even realizing what you were saying you spoke, "I bet your girlfriend never gets cold with you around." To your embarrassment but surprise he cracked a big smile. "I bet she would, if I had one." It was your turn to smile. "What about you?" You shook your head no as Paul let out a small breath that almost sounded like relief.
Before either of you could say something more, everyone gathered around the fire. The legends of the tribe had you captivated. So much history that you were never aware of, right under your nose. You could feel Paul glance at you every so often, gauging your reaction to everything that was said.
When the fire died down and Jacob's dad came to a stopping point, everyone quietly mingled until deciding to call it a night. You had talked to Paul the entire time, getting to know the basics. You had a lot more in common than you thought. The more you learned about him, the more you liked him. A lot. He followed you to Bella's truck, shoving his hands in his pockets.
"I had a really good time tonight" you spoke softly, now inches away from his face. You were so close you could feel his breath.
"I did too. I hope this won't be the last time I see you?" he questioned.
You glanced past him to see Bella and Jacob making their way up the hill.
"With everything going on, everything that's happening...I have a feeling we won't be going away anytime soon."
Paul smiled.
This is the part where he'll kiss me, you think. Your heart beats fast in anticipation.
But Paul just stands there. Staring. He stood there so long that you cleared your throat awkwardly.
"I'll see you around Paul." You tried to hide the disappointment on your face as you climbed into the truck and shut the door. He had let you, still standing there for a moment before turning around to walk back to the house.
Tears welled up in your eyes. How foolish were you, to think that a guy like Paul Lahote would just sweep you off your feet? Sure, a kiss might be moving fast for the first night, but he didn't even give you his number. You analyzed everything you had said to each other. Nothing was even romantic, so why on earth would you think he liked you back? Pathetic.
Bella said goodbye to Jacob and got in the truck. One thing you loved most about your sister was that she knew you better than anyone else. And if there was one thing you hated, it was when people asked if you were upset. One look in your direction and she didn't say a word, starting the truck and driving off. She knew when you were ready to talk, you would.
*Paul's POV*
I turned around, watching the truck drive away, getting smaller and smaller in the distance. I was frozen in place.
What is wrong with me?
"Everything go okay?" Sam approached, clearly sensing my distress.
"I'm never like this with women, Sam. I should have kissed her, but I didn't. I stood there, right in front of her with my mouth open like a fucking fish. I-I've never felt this way-" I rambled on.
"Dude it's alright" Sam interrupted, "Did you tell her that she's your imprint?"
I sighed. "I didn't even get that far. I don't, I don't want her to feel forced to like me like that right away. I want to treat it like a normal relationship....but I think I went ahead and screwed it up anyways." I huffed.
Sam placed his hand on my shoulder. "Deep breathes. You didn't screw anything up, you just met her. You can tell her about the imprinting when you're comfortable....as far as the kiss, well, it's never too late." Sam held up keys to his vehicle, putting them in my hand. "Only if you need them." He slapped me on the shoulder, winking, as he walked back to where Emily was.
I watched him sneak up behind her, she giggled as he peppered kisses on the back of her neck. I knew what he was doing. And it was working, as I made my way towards his car.
*Back to Second Person POV*
You sniffled, taking a deep breath. You were done crying over this man. This man you had literally just met. So what if he didn't like you? There is a million other people out there. Why did you care so much?
A knock on the door interrupted your thoughts. Charlie was gone over night on a hunting trip and Bella was fast asleep.
Another knock. It was almost damn near midnight. As you slowly approached the door, bat in hand, you looked through the peep hole.
It was Paul.
You flung open the door, ready to ask him what the hell him problem was, when he lunged forward. Grabbing you by the face, he kissed you feverishly. Your heart pounded in your chest as you melted into the kiss, tongues dancing together in perfect harmony. One hand held you by the hair as the other grabbed you by the waist, pulling you impossibly closer. When you both needed to breathe you pulled away, Paul's hand held tightly so you couldn't go too far. He leaned his forehead against yours, panting.
"I am so sorry I didn't do this when you left. You, you make me nervous. It's a feeling I've never really had before. When you left I- I didn't want to let you go that easy. I'm sorry." He said.
You leaned in to kiss him once, slowly, softly. "I've been waiting for you to do that," you smiled. "There's a lot more where that came from...if you'll have me." he said, his hand sliding down to interlock with yours, bringing back up to place a gentle kiss on the top.
"I couldn't imagine anything better." you grinned.
*Paul's POV*
Y/N guided me to the couch, asking to stay awhile. We held each other until the sun came up, just talking. It was as if everything right there had changed for me. She would be my number one priority, to have and protect. I vowed to myself that I would do anything she asked, that I will love her no matter the cost. Whatever makes her happy.
I had to leave before Charlie got home, but not without a heated make out session at the door. It took everything in me to pull away from her, both of us lingering. Despite her not letting go either, I could see the bags under her eyes forming.
"Get some sleep baby, text me when you wake up okay?" She nodded, and after a good 20 minutes of more kissing, I left.
I understood why Sam was always mopey without Emily around. As I drove away I could feel my heart ache like something was missing. This was a whole new feeling, and for the first time I thanked whatever spirits gave me her.
My imprint.
I bit my lip as I remembered I still had to tell her. I'm worried about how she'll take it, but there was something heavier on my mind.
Victoria.
Part Two Anyone? :)

i knew i'd never let you get away
now playing ... 4ever by clairo
pt. 1
wc: 662
Tumblr media
it had been three years without you. one thousand and ninety-five days without you. twenty-six thousand, two hundred and ninety-eight hours. it had been too long living without you, and it was enough to make a lesser man go insane. every second without you was agony, but he would soon be able to rectify his biggest mistake: not being the man you deserved.
he thought he would be happy if he had his family, that he could learn to love his wife one day, but he was wrong. none of it meant anything if he didn't have you. you were the light of his life, his first thought in the morning and his last thought just before he fell asleep.
wake up, pat the sheets next to him in his half-asleep daze to check if you were still there. you aren't. you never are anymore. eat breakfast, miss your cooking and how you always made sure he was well-fed. go to work, his only distraction from you. come home, look down at the keychain you had given to him after a date at the carnival as he unlocks the door. eat dinner, yearn to be back in your kitchen and in your arms. you used to dance with him under the fluorescent lights as you waited for the food to finish cooking.
sometimes when he showers, he still feels the ghost of your fingers in his hair. and when he closes his eyes, the warmth of the water almost feels like you again. the water bill had never been higher.
and of course he had been keeping tabs on you throughout your time apart. he'd made you a promise, after all. he needed to be able to find you. you had become an art dealer now like you had always wanted, and, true to your promise, you waited for him.
you still live in the same house. you never dated anyone new. despite everything he had done to you, you waited for him. you're still waiting for him.
that fact was enough for him to gather the courage to come back to you again. he had waited long enough to be with you. the divorce with his wife had been finalized a year ago, but the last thing he wanted to do was disrupt your life while you were trying to move on.
he stands in front of your art gallery, nervously adjusting his tie and brushing away any loose strands of hair. he takes in frantic gulps of air, steeling himself as he walks inside.
he clasps his hands behind his back, trying to look every bit of the proper gentleman he aspires to be.
"hello, is there something i can help you find-" it's you. he feels his knees grow weak, the breath getting knocked out of his lungs. you're so beautiful. how did he go so long without seeing your face like this?
"-satoru," you say softly, a dazzling smile lighting up your features. just when he thought you couldn't be prettier, you're smiling. at him.
he's imagined your reunion a thousand times over. and he's dreamed about it twice as much, but nothing could ever compare to the real thing. that knowing twinkle in your eye was something his mind never could have conjured, which makes this moment so much better.
he stands there like an idiot, his mouth gaping open. "i came back for you, baby. like i promised," he chokes out, his voice thin and breathless.
you stay silent, just grinning at him before you launch yourself into his arms. he catches you without hesitation, one arm around your waist and the other cradling the back of your head. like always.
he has a silent moment of gratitude to all the gods in existence, thanking them for leading him back to you. he's not a religious man, but as he stands there, with you finally back in his arms, he thinks that maybe he could be.

╰┈➤ “accidents happen angel”
warnings: light swearing, just fluff.
summary: rafe comes home to a tearful y/n and stained rug. (this was an anonymous request, but i accidentally deleted it instead of answering it.)
her feet jumped around the room as she twirled in another bout of pent up energy. the playlist she’d put on echoed through the house as she sang along breathlessly.
she’d had quite a boring day, rafe was out doing business with barry, so she used the time alone to clean his house. having gutted every single room, putting things in new places, moving furniture, she finally decided to take a breather. which in her eyes, was dancing around the living room until she was completely out of breath.
smooth operator blared through the expensive sound system as she gesticulated furiously, mindlessly acting out a music video as she whirled around the coffee table.
just as the chorus was coming up, she let out a yelp as she knocked into the coffee table, knocking her coffee off in turn. “shit! shit!” she froze in place for a split second, unsure of what to do before running the the kitchen.
grabbing armfuls of cleaning products, she rushed back through to the living room. sucking in a harsh breath, her and the now coffee stained, white rug had a minor face off, the costly material taunting her.
she fell into a cross legged position beside the stain, half-arsedly reading the instructions on the backs of the various bottles now scattered around her.
she began scrubbing furiously, attempting to lift the stain before it dried, but she only seemed to be making it worse.
some time had passed before her arms began to quiver, worn out from the frantic cleaning.
she didn’t know what to do, her heart pounded in her chest as she repeatedly checked the time on her phone, nearing the time rafe usually came home.
tears brimmed along her waterline as a suffocating panic washed over her. it felt as though the room was closing in on her, and the music still blaring didn’t help at all.
her fingers brushed against the once-soft fur rug, grabbing at it in an attempt to ground herself.
her chest only tightened further when she heard the front door open and close, his footsteps getting dauntingly closer.
she could hardly see through the hot tears as they cascaded down her flushed cheeks. she must’ve looked a mess, curled up on the floor against the couch, her hands covered in cleaning products.
his footsteps came to a halt in the doorway, his eyes widening at the sight. “y/n?”
her heavy breaths and sniffles gave her away immediately. rounding the couch, he looked between her and the stain, furrowing his brows in confusion. “y/n, what happened?” he asked, concern laced in his voice.
struggling to string a sentence together, incoherent babbles fell from her lips as she looked up at him, the skin around her eyes red raw from rubbing.
he placed a gentle hand on her cheek, cupping it as he knelt beside her, not caring for the brown liquid seeping through the leg of his suit pants. “angel, i can’t help if i don’t know what’s wrong..” he muttered, guiding her to look at him.
unsuccessful in his attempt to calm the sobbing girl, her blubbering only continued, her hair now falling from the bun she’d carefully crafted earlier. “i-i..”
“shh, baby. deep breaths m’kay? can you do that for me?” he cooed. she nodded slightly, mimicking the deep breaths he also began to take.
after a couple minutes, she reached a hand up to wipe her nose as she avoided his gaze. “i..i spi-stained the rug..i kno-knocked my coffee..” she sighed, her thoughts still slightly jumbled.
“i can see that angel. are you hurt? where’s the glass?” he questioned, his attention now drawn to the rug, scanning it for loose shards. “i had to put it in the trash, it-it smashed..”
“that’s okay princess, as long as you’re okay..” he mumbled, pulling her head into his chest. twisting her face, she met his eyes. “b-but the rug..i ruined it..” she whimpered, tears threatening to spill once again. “i don’t care about the rug baby, i didn’t like it anyways”
“pinky promise?” she whispered, tilting her head at him. chuckling to himself, he withdrew his hand from her cheek, reaching his little finger out to interlock it with her. “i pinky promise angel, we can go into town to buy a new one tomorrow, m’kay?”
shaking her head in agreement, she leaned into his touch, inhaling his scent, allowing it to invade her senses. “come on, why don’t we have a shower?” he suggested, pulling her to her feet.
“are you saying i smell?” she frowned, crossing her arms over her chest.
“like bleach” he joked, poking fun at her misuse of the surface cleaner.

𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐃 | 𝐀𝐑𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐗𝐇𝐄𝐊𝐀𝐉
Tumblr media
summary: arber gets bruised from a fight during a game, leaving you frantic for answers and reassurance.
warnings: mentions of blood, fighting, semi nsfw toward the end?
word count: 0.88k
You paced around the kitchen, your phone tight in your grip. Yours and Arber's text messages open on the screen, your four consecutive texts going unanswered. The TV was now playing SportsCenter, the Habs game having ended about an hour ago.
As per usual, you spent your evening after work watching your boyfriend's hockey game. However, instead of watching a productive game including garnering an assist or a shot blocked, you watched his night come to an end earlier after he was skated off the ice following a fight at the end of the second period
Nothing much had provoked the fight, the previous period and a half being rather tame. However, after a couple of less-than-favourable games from the team as well as his time on ice being reduced, Arber’s frustrations had hit a boiling point.
Arber had laid a couple of hits but after being knocked down next to the boards, Arber charged after his attacker, cross-checking him from behind. The two of them exchanged a couple of jabs, with Arber’s opponent getting in a few more than he did resulting in a rare defeat, before they were separated by the officials. As he was skating off, the camera gave you a good look at his split brow and bruised face, blood leaking down his face and dripping onto his jersey.
You found that you stopped paying attention right at that moment, your focus solely on the wellbeing of your boyfriend. You’d seen him get in fights before but not once had you seen him get in a fight that resulted in such damage to his face. You sent a text a few minutes after watching the altercation, expecting him to reply a little later. When you didn’t get a reply, you sent another text, hoping the first one just got lost in other notifications. Normally, Arber would send you a text right after he gets out of a game, letting you know he’d be home shortly.
Almost an hour and a half after the game had ended, you heard the front door open. The sound of shoes shuffling against the hardwood in the hall echoes through the house, accompanied by the sound of his bag slumping to the floor. He finally comes around the corner, meeting you in the kitchen with a nervous expression on his face.
“Are you okay?” You ask, approaching him and examining the wound in his brow that has begun to cause his eye to swell. It’s been properly stitched up and cleaned by the medical staff.
He lets out a sigh of relief, hands settling on your waist. “I’m fine, y/n.” He says.
“Are you sure?” You ask him again.
“Yes, one hundred percent they-”
“Then what the fuck is wrong with you?!” You shout, slapping his chest.
“Ow, what the fuck?” He asks, dropping his hands from your waist and instead protecting himself.
You groan loudly, stepping away from him and pacing around the kitchen. “Why the fuck did you fight that guy?”
He sighs, pulling his beanie off and running a hand through his hair. “I don’t know…” He huffs. “I was pissed, I’m not doing jack shit when I’m on the ice. I didn’t know what else to do, I had to make an impact somehow.”
“Well, you can't just lose your temper like this every time you get upset!” You shout. “You know how stupid that was? You could’ve gotten seriously hurt.”
“Y/n, I wouldn’t have gotten that badly hurt they wouldn’t-”
“I don’t give a shit, Arber!” You interrupt, your voice getting increasingly louder and your breath more ragged. “On top of that, you don’t even text me to say you’re okay!”
“Okay!” He stops you, coming over and wrapping his arms around you, pulling you in tight. He shushes you, attempting to soothe your ragged breaths. “I’m sorry. I should’ve texted you when I got out. It’s just… you know how stressful it's been… not putting up points and not getting any ice time. It's not helping me especially when I’m trying to stay up with the Habs.”
“I know,” You say softly, nodding against his chest. You stand in his arms, your temper coming down.
“I’m sorry, again.” He says.
“I know, it’s okay. I shouldn’t have been that upset.” You reply.
“No you had every right, I shouldn’t do stupid shit like that.” He says. You chuckle softly, leaning back and eyeing his wounds once more. You wince at them, knowing they’ll be much worse in the morning.
“I hope I didn’t piss you off too much,” Arber says. You give him a look and Arber can read it. However, Arber plays dumb. “What’s that look on your face?”
“You know. Don’t make me spell it out for you.” You say, running a hand through his hair.
“No, I don’t. I think the fight knocked out a few brain cells.” Arber said, feigning confusion.
You rolled your eyes, going up on your tip toes to bring your lips to his ear. “You know I want you.” You say in a whisper.
A smirk pulls on his lip. Arber bends down, picking you up, and throwing you over his shoulder. You squeal, feet kicking, as he walks down the hall to your bedroom.

Imagine 2012 Donnie with a partner who just doesn’t get math at all, not even science and it’s just him tutoring them and sleeping over at their place
I was gonna write a study date for this, but then I got my results for the HiSET math test and found out that I am, in fact, getting my high school equivalency, so I'm gonna write Don celebrating that instead. Hope you don't mind lol
Test Kisses
Words: 850
The first four tests had been a breeze, As and high Bs across the board. But then, there was math, and in the fortnight leading up to the test, Don had gone over to her house almost every night, the two of them pulling all-nighters every other, until the night before the test. Don had indeed gone over that night, but insisted that studies had shown that cramming the night before a big test would actually be detrimental. He had only allowed her to read through her notes for half an hour before helping her through her bedtime routine, and cuddling up next to her, until she fell asleep. Upon awakening, the sun was shining through the fluttering blinds of her open window, and she found a note written in Donnie's messy handwriting on her bedside table.
Sorry I couldn't stay, but you know I can't risk being seen, and Leo would've nagged my shell off. I wish you lots of luck on your test today, though I know you won't need it. You've worked so hard, and have been tutored by the smartest turtle around, so I know that you can do this!! You're a whole lot smarter than you give yourself credit for! ^w^
Love, Donatello <3
Actually taking the test was super stressful, and she finished with only two minutes remaining. It had taken forever for the test results to come. All of the other test results had been posted exactly a week after she took the test, but this was not the case for math. She had to call the testing company three times over the course of a week before the finally opened an investigation, and throughout the whole process, she had whined and complained endlessly to Donnie. After what felt like an eternity, she was finally notified that the results were posted. She didn't hesitate to grab her laptop and sprint out of her apartment, racing to the nearest sewer cap. Don had installed a special button in the alleyway, so that she could get to the lair whenever she wanted without having to struggle to move the hubcap. Practically sliding down the ladder with practiced ease, she hit the ground hard and began sprinting towards the lair. Upon entering the lair's living room, she skidded to a halt, and all but shouted at Leo.
"Where's Don?!" The words escaped her as if being thrown from her throat in all one breath, and the words,
"In the lab?" had barely left Leo's lips before she had taken off at full speed once more. She ran into the lab, and Don barely had time to spin around in his chair to face her before she was in the air, jumping towards him. He scrambled to catch her, and was almost unsuccessful. After regaining his stability, he looked at her with confusion rampant in his eyes. Before being able to ask her what had brought her so frantically to his lab, she shoved her laptop into his hands, and screeched.
"The results are up!!" She jumped from his lap and began pacing, anxiety written across all of her features and scribbled throughout all of her movements, from the longest of her strides, to the smallest twitch of her muscles.
"That's great!" Donnie replied. "Did you pass?" She whipped her head around to him, looking at him as if he had grown a second head.
"I don't know!"
"You haven't checked yet?" He asked.
"No! I came straight here. I'm too nervous!" She exclaimed, her pacing gaining speed. "Will you read them to me?" He gave her a soft, wide smile, and agreed, lifting the top of her laptop open and entering her email and password to the test company's website. Clicking to the right tab, he pulled up the score report, with her anxious, quick steps serving as a background beat.
"Oh, Sweetie." He said, unreadable emotion in his voice. She stopped in her track and turned to him.
"What?! What is it?!" Don smiled wide at her.
"18/20. You passed! You got 70% on Numbers and Operations on Numbers, 77% on Algebra, 50% on probability, statistics, and data analysis, and 25% on measurements and geometry. You're graduating!" She squealed, jumping up and down, before charging at Donnie and tackling him in a hug, sending them both to the ground that time. She lifted just far enough away from him to gaze into his eyes, overjoyed, before beginning to cover every inch of his face in kisses.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!" She exclaimed. "I love you so much! I never could have done this without you!" He placed his hands on her shoulders, pushing her back for a moment, still embracing her.
"Hey, as happy as I am that I was helpful to you, I need you to know that it was you and your hard work that did this, not me. You did this, you earned this, and I am so proud of you, you deserve this." He said, seriously, and then smiled, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, loving kiss.

Pairing: Mean!Ethan Landry x Fem!Reader
Content Includes: Asthma attack, angst, fluff
Summary: Ethan decided to scare Y/N after a fight, it doesn’t end well.
Masterlist
It had been two hours. Two fucking hours of Ethan studying. Y/N had been laying on his bed, randomly scrolling on her phone. She came over after her classes to work on an assignment for a class they shared, but after finishing, Ethan wanted to study for his Econ final the following day. Every thirty minutes, she would try to get him to spend time with her, rubbing at his shoulders and gently kissing his neck, and every time, he dismissed her.
“Ethan,” she whined, drawing out his name.
“What?” he mocked. His pen frantically moved across the paper as his head turned to his textbook and back to his notes.
She took a puff from her inhaler, which caused Ethan to turn around. His eyes looked tired, and his shoulders looked tense. Y/N knows how much Ethan hadn’t slept lately, the nights where she felt him slip out, presumably to work on school. What she didn’t know though, is that her perfect, shy boyfriend, was out killing.
“Can you take a break?” She asked as she sat up. He sighed and put pressure on his temples. “Do you need advil?”
He shook his head as he looked back up to her. He stood up and walked over to grab the water bottle on his night stand, taking a quick swig. “I think you need a break.” She suggested.
He groaned at her. “I need you to stop being so clingy.”
She was taken aback by his words, he had never snapped at her before.
“I’m..I’m not? I’m just worried about you.”
“Bullshit, you’ve been trying to get me to pay attention to you for the past hour.” Ethan argued as he sat back at his desk. His back was turned to her, but he could feel her gaze on him.
“Don’t be an asshole,” she muttered, getting up.
He let out a half tired half annoyed laugh. He rubbed his palms over his face. He genuinely wasn’t pissed with her; he had been stressed from his dad getting into his ass and his poor grades in classes. He did want to spend time with her, he was just…frustrated, in certain ways. He needed to let out his stress with some form of relief.
“I’m not being an asshole, I just have a shit ton of work.” Ethan grumbled.
She nodded and grabbed her purse. “Then I’ll just leave you to your work.” She spat before leaving, slamming the door.
On her way home, she clutched the strap of her purse. She felt her anxiety peaking, checking her phone for any messages.
Ethan kept behind her carefully, watching her intensely. He watched her turn a corner, and he checked around him to make sure they were alone. He slid his mask on and quickened his pace.
Y/N started looking through her purse for her inhaler, feeling each breath getting heavier and heavier.
“Shit.” She cursed once she realized she probably left it on Ethan’s bed.
Her eyes started to water from the overwhelming weight on her lungs.
She heard quick footsteps grow louder and louder behind her, and she pulled her pepper spray out. Ethan caught up to her, grabbing her by the shoulders and yelling “Boo!”
She screamed bloody murder and turned around, spraying towards him. He inhaled some of the spray, instantly coughing.
“What,” cough. “The.” cough. “Fuck?”
He took off his mask and coughed more. Y/N gradually fell to the ground and started to wheeze. She held her hand over her chest, gasping for air. Ethan looked at her after his coughing fit, and his eyes immediately widened. “Shit. Shit.”
He leaned down and went through her purse, desperately trying to find her inhaler. She gasped and wheezed as Ethan ransacked her purse. She felt tears spill from her eyes as she began to panic. Could this night go any worse?
“Fuck, there was a pharmacy near by. I’ll go, I’ll go get an inhaler.” He said quickly before getting up and running back around the corner. Her eyes followed him as his form disappeared, and her vision started to blur.
When Ethan came back, she was laid on the floor, eyes closed.
His eyes widened and he dropped down on his knees next to her. He shook her limp body and called out her name.
“No, no, fuck fuck no,” he cursed as he picked up her motionless body.
She woke up to a bright light shining in her eyes as she softly groaned. She moved her hand up to her eyes and gently rubbed them. She saw someone jerk their head up out of the corner of her eye, and she saw Ethan enter her peripheral vision.
“H-Hey! Are you okay? Do you need water?” He immediately asked, grabbing her hand.
She looked at him and blinked. “What happened?”
He gulped and looked down shamefully. “I- Uh,”
She thought for a moment, and she sighed as she remembered. He looked at her and knew she knew, and he waited anxiously for her response.
“I remember you scared me.” She said.
“Y-Yeah, I did. I’m so sorry. You started to panic, and I-I went to go get an inhaler for you, but I came back and you were-“ he stuttered, face heating up with embarrassment.
She grabbed his other hand and squeezed. “H-Hey it’s okay,” she said, softly smiling.
He shook his head at her. “It’s not, I was an asshole. I’m sorry, my dad has been such an ass, and I’ve been so stressed lately. It’s not an excuse, b-but I-“ he was cut off by her lips gently meeting his.
He sighed and relaxed his shoulders, kissing her back. She pulled away slightly and smiled.
“They said you were lucky I got you here when I did.”
“My hero,” she softly praised, making his ears turn red. She caressed his warm cheek with her palm, and she leaned forward and kissed his nose.
“Good.” He said smirking, tugging her towards him, kissing her harshly. She breathed heavily at a quicker pace, and she pushed him off of her, looking around the room.
“Here,” he said, offering her inhaler. She grabbed it and took a puff, slowing her breathing.
She thanked him and he nodded at her.
“I’m gonna have twenty of those on me everywhere we go now.” He joked, causing her to softly chuckle. She rested her hand on his chest, feeling his heartbeat.
“I really am sorry. I love you.” He whispered.
“I love you too.”

kinktober day 22: cockwarming
this is my last departure from the prompt list ive been using! i wrote dacryphilia (crying) into a piece i did back in...june i believe, and i was very satisfied with how it came out but i just. i dont have any other ideas for that kink so i'm going with this instead /thumbs up emoji/
content warning: this is mushy and they are in love
read on AO3 | prompt list i will be returning to tomorrow! | word count: 760
soapghost, trans ghost, cis soap, immediately post MW2 canon
"all the way in."
ghost wiggled his hips a bit, working slowly so that soap's cock was fully seated inside him.
"that better, love?" soap asked, running a hand along the front of ghost's thigh.
ghost gave a contented sigh once his back was flush up against soap's chest. soap draped an arm over his torso and kissed behind his ear. "good."
soap rocked his hips a smidge, just enough to feel himself slip half an inch deeper in and out of ghost's cunt before settling to go back to what they were watching.
which happened to be ghost's favorite mini-documentary about deep-sea gigantism. soap combed his fingers through ghosts dark, short hair while they listened to the narrator quietly talk about the role buoyancy plays in creating monstrously large life on the ocean floor. ghost had watched everything this marine biologist had ever made (and thus so had soap), but this piece in particular was his favorite. soap let the familiar information wash over him, savoring the intimacy of what they were doing.
through a series of poorly timed last minute plan changes that were out of both of their hands, they hadn't seen each other in nine consecutive weeks. and while normally that wouldn't be such a big deal, ever since sheperd's betrayal they had both been a bit edgy about having to be away from each other for more than a day or so.
no one had questioned that they had started showing up together in the mornings, that they left work together at the end of the day, that they were rarely out of each others sights - everyone knew.
ghost had moved into soap's house shortly after they'd both physically recovered from their wounds and no one had said a word.
they'd wasted no more time, knowing that too much had already been lost to needless pining and stalling: they set about learning everything about each other every chance they got, whether that was soap cooking them breakfast on a saturday or watching ghost's ocean documentaries (usually followed by a very thorough lecture of ghost's take on the subject matter) or spending hours in bed experimenting with what made the other tick. at the end of it, soap and ghost had bound themselves together for good.
and so after such an unexpectedly long time apart, they'd been frantic for each other upon reunion. ghost had returned to soap impatiently tapping his foot on the tarmac and shoving his gear at the nearest soldier with a barked order to get it checked back in and half-dragging ghost home, needing him as close as possible now.
that had been several hours ago; they'd been in bed almost the entire time and had zero intention of leaving. they'd already decided that they didn't even want to talk about the mistakes and assignments that had led to them spending so much time apart, just focus on that they were together now.
ghost shifted his leg back, hooking it over soap's to pull him in just that much closer. soap pushed his hips forward, kissing the corner of ghost's jaw as his cock slid into him, already full of his spend, just that much further.
soap vaguely registered a small white jellyfish on the television as ghost took one of the captain's hands and held it tightly over his chest. "hate being away from you," he admitted quietly. "bloody torture. and i'd know all about that."
soap almost snorted at the last comment. "bleedin' christ, simon," he said. "it is, though."
they laid in comfortable quiet, ghost pressing soap's hand flat to his chest over his heartbeat, like he needed them both to know that it was still there. needed him as close as he could be in every way, like even having him inside his cunt wasn't close enough.
soap closed his eyes and rubbed his thumb across ghost's chest, letting the heat under his hands and against his chest and around his cock remind him that ghost was there, ghost was safe, ghost was alive. and so was he.
they stayed like that for some time, soft and warm and still, until the documentary ended and ghost reached back to put a hand on soap's hip, giving him a small push.
"give us one more?"
soap smiled into the side of his neck. "i'm not 20 anymore, love," he said.
"please?"
soap chuckled and put a hand flat over ghost's lower abdomen, rocking slowly in and out of him to get fully hard again. "can't say no to you."

Family Barbecue
Tumblr media
anon this was such a cute request, i love it and i hope y’all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!! <3
——
It was your favorite time of year, the summer time. Time to spend with family and friends and especially some drinks. Every July, the Burrow family would host a family-wide barbecue. You had been attending for years, and Joe’s parents made sure that their planning always worked with your schedule and Joe’s schedule.
Ever since Joe brought you to the first family barbecue after being together for 5 months, his family knew that you were the one for him. You always offered to help cook, clean, entertain the kids, or do anything else they needed. They all saw how Joe looked at you too, with pride in his eyes.
This was year 5 of going to the family Barbecue, and Joe’s family kept poking fun at him about how he hasn’t popped the marriage question yet. They wanted it just as bad as you did.
“Joey, are you ready to go?” You yelled up the stairs from the kitchen. Joe took just as long as a girl getting ready some days.
“Yes baby, I’ll be down in a sec,” he responded back as you heard frantic footsteps up the stairs. You were a planner, and Joe was not. You had a timeline of what needed to be done when, and Joe just went with the flow until he got distracted and needed to be directed back to what needed to be done.
You headed out the garage door, loading your cooler of drinks into the backseat of Joe’s car. The snack bag you had packed followed the drinks. Your overnight bags were packed last. Since his parents lived an hour and a half away and there would be drinks consumed, his parents offered up their extra bedroom for the two of you.
After double checking your list that was stationed on the island, Joe finally came down the stairs, looking as handsome as ever. He was wearing just a basic pair of gym shorts, a bengals tshirt, and his white Nike athletic shoes. Of course, the dork had his shirt tucked in. That was something you always messed with him about.
“Cmon babe, we gotta go or we’re gonna be way late,” you said, leading the way to the garage to finally leave. An hour and a half drive still ahead of you.
Joe grabbed a bottle of water from the garage fridge and got in the car. You settled yourself in the passenger seat with your Nintendo Switch Lite with Animal Crossing ready to go. While you didn’t hardcore game, some Animal Crossing and Minecraft here and there were sometimes what you did to entertain yourself.
After hitting the road, Joe played his music and hummed along as you were focused on your game. His hand rested on your thigh as he drove along. Eventually, you got tired of playing your game, so you decided to take a short nap. You leaned your seat back a bit and propped up your pillow between your shoulder and the window.
"Can you let me know when we're like half an hour away?" you asked, Joe replied, "Of course babe, you gonna put on your makeup then?" he questioned, glancing over at you for a second. You replied with a hum and curled to a semi-comfortable place to nap.
pat pat pat
Joe patted you awake, you stirred and lifted the back of your seat up.
"We're half an hour away honey," he said, smiling in your direction as you rubbed the sleep out of your eyes.
"Thanks Joey, now don't brake check anyone," you joked with him, poking at his arm. You pulled your makeup bag out of your car bag, opting for just some eyebrow filling and mascara, and of course highlight. That was your favorite step of your makeup routine.
As you pulled into Joe's parent's neighborhood, you collected your things in your bag and freshened up your outfit. You chose to wear your favorite pair of jean shorts and a cute flowy tank top.
Pulling into the driveway, Joe's parents came to greet you. The 3pm air was hot but with a breeze. Hugs were given and passed, and as you approached the house, Joe's nephew Jordan came running up to you.
"Y/n!" he cheered with his little 3 year old voice. That alone melted your heart.
"Hi Jordan! How's my big guy doing?" you asked and picked him up, resting him on your hip.
"Good! Let's go play!" He squirmed, wanting to be put down to go run around. You could tell he was fresh from his nap that was taken earlier. If only naps for adults were that rejuvenating.
"We can play here in a minute, but could you use your big, strong muscles to help us?" you tickled his stomach. He pretended to flex. He ran out to the car where Joe and his parents were, clinging to Joe's leg. Joe picked him up and gave him a little fist bump.
"Y/n said I can use my big muscles to help!" Jordan said with a smile on his face. Joe set him down and handed him the smallest bag. You grabbed your overnight bag and the cooler and headed inside with Jordan leading the way.
After placing your things in the guest room, you followed Jordan outside to go say hi to Joe's siblings and their partners. You cracked open your first drink of the night while Jim worked on grilling up some hamburgers and hot dogs.
Jordan pulled you over to the swing set, you set him in the swing that looked like a little car, pulling him toward you to get the momentum going. You continued to push Jordan in the swing as he laughed the cutest little laugh.
Joe was admiring from afar with a beer in hand. He was standing with his dad while he grilled, watching you play with Jordan, a smile spread along his face. You two had talked about kids before, but a ring needed to come first.
The next thing that Jordan wanted to do was race you and Joe. Of course, Joe said yes, setting his beer down to race.
"Okay, Jordan count us down," you say, lining up to begin to run.
"Okay y/n, 3...2..." and Jordan was off before the count of 1. You and Joe giggled, but eventually ran and tried to catch up to him. Jordan had passed the established finish line before you and Joe could get there. He jumped in excitement.
"I'm not letting you beat me, y/n" Joe huffed out as he began to run up to you, tackling you to the ground.
"Burrow, you're a quarterback, not a defensive end, my god," you groaned after hitting the ground, allowing laughs to escape your mouth. Jordan came over and giggled, climbing on top of Joe who was still on top of you.
"Uncle Joe sandwich!" you cheered and grabbed for Jordan's hand. You all giggled and eventually, Joe wormed his way out of being between you and Jordan. He outstretched a hand to you, helping you up.
Eventually, dinner was served and everyone gathered in the screened in porch to eat. Jordan insisted on sitting between you and Joe. Jordan's mom plopped his booster seat down in the chair between you and Joe. Jordan dug into his food as soon as it was set in front of him, ketchup ending up all over his hands, face, and clothes. As you ate, you would use your napkin to dab off Jordan's face, causing your napkin to turn red from the mess he had made.
Joe looked at you admirably, adoring how good you were with kids. You secretly hoped that Joe would see how good you were with kids and want to hurry up and propose already.
After dinner, Jordan helped you clean up the dining space by taking the empty paper plates to the trashcan and leading you to the paper towels so he could help you wipe down. You lifted him up to grab the roll off the island inside, carrying him like Buzz Lightyear back out to the patio, giggles filling the air.
The rest of the family had gone to sit out by the fire pit, insisting that you not do any cleaning up. But you couldn't just not help, it wasn't like you. And you could maneuver Jordan into doing anything with you, which also gave his parents a break.
Out at the fire pit, you could see the rest of the family laughing and joking. You admired Joe from the screened in porch while you waited on Jordan to run in and take the dirty paper towels to the trash can. Jordan ran out, tugging at your arm to go join the rest of the family.
You and Jordan joined the rest of the family, sitting down on the outdoor blanket. You sat criss cross applesauce and Jordan sat in your lap and played with your fingers while letting out yawns.
After a few more drinks, Jordan was asleep in your lap. His parents seemed ready to go, so you offered to help Jordan into his car seat.
You headed out to their car, carrying Jordan with his head resting on your shoulder.
"Thanks for playing with him and taking care of him today, y/n. It was a really nice break for us, he's a wild one," Joe's brother said.
"It's really no problem, I had so much fun with this little ball of energy," you chuckled as you set Jordan in his car seat, buckling him in.
"One of these days, I want y'all to give him a cousin," Joe's brother laughed out. You hugged and went your separate ways.
Joe and his parents had transitioned to inside the house, working to clean up the kitchen.
"How can I help?" you asked as you walked in on them all doing different cleaning activities.
"Babe you helped plenty today, go take a shower or relax. We got this," Joe said as he brought you into his embrace. There really wasn't much left to clean up.
After things had been cleaned up, everyone moved to the couch to sit and relax a bit before bed. It was about 9:30 and the exhaustion from the day was hitting you. You let out a soft yawn as Joe pulled you to lean into his shoulder.
"I think we're gonna head to bed. It's been a long day," Joe announces to his parents as he stands up off the couch. You follow.
When getting to your room for the night, you headed straight for the shower. Playing with Jordan all day got you sweaty and stinky, not to mention the July heat.
"Babe I loved watching you play with Jordan today. I can't wait for us to have our own kids one day. A little Joe and y/n stumbling around," Joe said, leaning down to kiss your forehead.
"Me too Joey, me too," you sighed as you stepped into the warm shower.
After such a long day, a shower and some snuggles were great.
You and Joe were cuddled up into bed when he blurted out, "I love you, y/n and I want to marry you some day. I promise it'll be soon,"
"I love you too Joey, and I can't wait for that day. It'll be the best day of our lives," you smile as you close your eyes, drifting off into a peaceful sleep.
The next morning, you woke up alone. That's not normally how things went when you and Joe stayed with his parents. He'd wait for you so you could leave the bedroom together.
You slid on your slippers and headed for the kitchen, following the smell of bacon. When you began to approach the entrance to the kitchen, you heard conversation. Sometimes, you loved to eavesdrop, but you also hated to butt in during conversation, so you stood by the doorway, out of sight of Joe and his parents.
"So when are you finally gonna pop the question?" his dad nudged at him.
"Soon, I swear. I've got the ring picked out and everything, I just need to send it to my jeweler," Joe said as he set out silverware.
"We love her and it's about time she became part of the family for real," his mom spoke out, walking up to Joe to lovingly rub his back. His family had been pestering him for a while to propose, but he wanted to do it on his own time, which you understood.
"It'll be soon, I promised that to her and I promise that to you all. Cause after seeing her with Jordan yesterday, I know she is who I'm meant to marry. Not that I didn't have those thoughts before, it just really proved to me that it's about time I asked her to marry me," Joe responded in a soft voice, trying not to allow his voice to carry.
You stood in the doorway for a minute more just to make sure the conversation was over. Soon, you approached Joe and pulled him into a side hug. He held onto you for a minute before leading you both to fill your plates with breakfast food.
You had a peaceful morning with Joe and his parents. You loved his family and couldn't wait to officially join it.

“Yes.” | “Kneel.” | Best of Three | Correspondence | Appraisal | Collapse | Cupcake | Foggy | Cracking | Just Breathe | Urge | Trim | Stupid | Upkeep | Old Defeat | Watching | Simple Loyalty | Overreaction | Set Up for Failure | Burning | Healed Wrong | Haunted | Boxes Buried | Heavy Blow | Loneliness
“Cupcake. Cup-...”
The house is dark. The lights were off, as Major dozed in his room and Simon finished up work at his laptop. Right before the home invasion. They are still off, only the moonlight that sneaks in through the windows illuminating the space. Major’s body, naked and shiny with drying sweat, heaves for air where it is huddled in a far corner. Simon’s step to approach the body inspired a jolt in it. Major is smaller now as he sucks down air.
The thought of using Major’s name does cross his mind. Simon can imagine it, can foresee the bonding that would come if he just humanized the guy a little.
It’s too dangerous. Major is simple, he does best with very clear and predictable expectations. Being kept in his place. He’s put on more weight around the stomach and arms, here. He’s slept in a bed. His hair is softer, growing faster. Simon didn’t know him before, but he saw the exhaustion under Major’s eyes and the wreck that was his hair. He can tell this is the best place Majors had in a while. Maybe in his whole life. Calling him by his name… it wouldn’t help. Not really.
“Cupcake. I’m here.”
Knotted curls hang in front of that rugged face. Shoulders hitch up and down with each sharp gasp. Cupcake looks pathetic, except the scars all across his skin and the muscles bunched up remind Simon that he is a killer. Well, all that, plus the corpses littering the house. Major took every one of them out with his hands tied behind his back.
The blood trailing down Cupcake’s wrists gets a concerned look. Those twitching pink hands. They must be tingling, half-numb, and his shoulders must ache. Cupcake is hurting.
Lowering into a crouch, Simon sighs. Undoes his loose bun and lets it fall free, shaking his head to let his hair splay. Feels better. The duct tape residue across his cheeks gets an idle scratch. “Cupcake… I want you to think about your training.”
The frantic breaths sharpen and then get quieter, still rapid, as he listens.
“How close you got to being killed. To failing.”
Cupcake’s chest shudders worse as he tries to keep on hyperventilating without making a noise.
“It’s not an option to fail here. So I’ll say it again… come here, Cupcake.”
Major lurches into movement before his body’s ready for it. Jerks sideways, away from his corner, and shuffles forward on his knees so suddenly that he falls onto his front with an undignified grunt. By the time he makes it to Simon, he is jittering with the exertion and from how little oxygen is actually making it to his brain. That breathing is bad.
Dark. Quiet. None of the bodies are moving. Simon itches to turn and look over his shoulder to check. But it is his responsibility to project confidence right now. Major’s tense, naked body is something to focus on, rather than the death scattered across the room. Major is pretty in the way a construction worker might be, or a cowboy. Rugged, unused to being clean, built with muscle to do practical things.
“You stopped them. And didn’t run, even though you had the chance.” Simon’s voice isn’t warm, exactly, but there is approval hanging in the air. Maybe gratitude, even. “Did good, Cupcake. I understand… that you’re not in control, right now. And if I touch you, I might lose a few fingers, even if you don’t mean to bite. So listen. I’m not going to touch. Not even to cut the ziptie.”
Chest to the floor, bent over his knees and still panting, Major does not respond. The lack of a growl is good enough, though.
“I want you to get yourself onto the couch. Rest. I’ll drag out the bodies.” A beat of silence. “Couch, Cupcake. Get to the couch.”
Major’s body starts moving at the simple command. Simon sinks down to fully sit on his heels, jaw set with tension as he watches the captive drag himself and falter only when he can’t get enough air to keep up the exercise. He wishes he could better help with the obvious fear that Cupcake is feeling, the panic, the… whatever he is feeling. But it’s best to leave it alone right now. Take care of the bodies before they stink, hopefully dissipate that murderous rage. Give Cupcake some time to settle down and remember not to lash out when his bindings are cut.
As soon as the bodies are deposited in the nearest dumpster, and the house has been triple checked to make sure it’s secure again, Simon pulls open a tool drawer in the kitchen, then pads toward Major’s bedroom. He steps calmly over the trail of blood across the doorway as he sinks into a power stance, teeth clamped absently around a screwdriver as he busies his hands with steadying the door and locating the screws.
Major won’t be needing the locks on this door anymore.

Here is my entry for the Spicy Six Winter Fic Challenge hosted by @thefreakandthehair (thanks so much to you and @unclewaynemunson for the awesome events this month!) My prompt was “kiss in the snow”.
Eddie is ladling a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, and mashed sweet potatoes into a baking dish when the phone rings. He nearly drops the bowl, hastily wiping the sticky orange mixture off his fingers before answering.
“Munson’s House of Holiday Horrors, Eddie speaking,” he intones cheerfully. Steve snorts with laughter on the other end of the line.
“What if it hadn’t been me calling?”
“It’s Christmas Eve Stevie, and everyone we know is out of town. Who else would be calling?” He knows the exact expression that will be on Steve’s face right now. He’ll be trying not to smile, which will twist his lips into a crooked little smirk instead. It’s one of Eddie’s favorite expressions. “How was work today?”
“Awful. Remind me never to agree to a holiday shift again. The Christmas movies were out of stock by 9, so I’ve had people screaming at me all day. Like I’m personally responsible for the fact that they waited till the last minute to try and rent the Grinch that Stole Christmas.”
“Mmm,” Eddie hums sympathetically. “Poor baby. What time are you coming over?”
“The pie needs to cool another 30 minutes, then I’m leaving.”
They’d argued about the pie for days. Eddie insisted that he had enough dishes planned to feed a small army, while Steve insisted that he just had to bring a pecan pie (which, coincidentally, is Wayne’s favorite).
“You know – you don’t have to work so hard to impress him. Wayne already likes you.”
“Shut up,” Steve says. “I’ll see you at 5:30.”
“See ya.”
They’re not quite to the point of exchanging I love you’s yet, even though it sits on the edge of his tongue every time they say goodbye.
Eddie hangs up the phone and turns to survey the chaos strewn across the kitchen. He’s got half an hour – 45 minutes with driving time. The sweet potato casserole has to be baked, and he still needs to finish two more dishes after that.
“Shit,” he mutters.
***
When Wayne ventures into the kitchen twenty minutes later to check on him, Eddie is frantically stirring sour cream and shredded cheese into the mashed potatoes.
“Christ almighty it’s hot in here. You’re sweatin’ like a hog.”
Eddie scowls and swipes at the hair sticking to his forehead. “Thanks Uncle Wayne.”
Unfortunately, his uncle’s not wrong. The kitchen is sweltering – not surprising, considering the stove and oven have been going all day – and Eddie’s shirt is soaked through. He desperately needs a shower, but he’s running way behind.
“Alright… what can I do to help?”
Eddie pauses long enough to fix his uncle with a skeptical look. “Are you forgetting the famous incident of the frozen turkey? Your cooking privileges have been permanently revoked.”
Wayne looks unimpressed. “Don’t you sass me. I can pull a goddamn casserole out of the oven.”
Eddie snickers and allows himself to be chased out of the kitchen. “I’ll be back in ten minutes. Don’t let that casserole burn!”
He takes the stairs up two at a time. It’s still a novelty, living in a house with a second floor – even after half a year. The water pressure is pretty awesome too, although he doesn’t take the time to enjoy it today. He rushes through a lukewarm shower, just enough to cool down and rinse the sweat off; throwing a clean shirt on when he gets out.
With hair still dripping, he thunders back down the stairs in time to see Wayne pull the casserole out, marshmallows browned to a perfect crust on top. His uncle watches in bemusement as Eddie covers the dish with aluminum foil and then hastens to dump frozen rolls onto a pan.
“What time is Steve supposed to get here?” Wayne asks.
Eddie doesn’t even dare look at the clock. “Any minute,” he says distractedly. He adjusts the oven temperature and shoves the pan in. He had a checklist, which is buried somewhere in the pile of used dishes and discarded packaging on the counter. He starts searching for it, shoving things aside in frustration, until he feels his uncle’s hands land heavy on his shoulders.
“Calm down, okay? Everything looks amazing. You’ve done a real good job Ed.”
The old man’s expression is unbearably soft when he turns around. Wayne looks at him like that all the time these days – ever since March, and that tense week in the hospital, when they weren’t sure if infection would finish the job the demobats had started.
It makes Eddie feel warm and awkward at the same time. He darts forward for a quick hug, pressing his face into the smoky flannel of his uncle’s shoulder, before stepping back and shoving the old man toward the door.
“Go on. Let me know when Steve gets here. And turn on the lights!”
***
Eddie loses track of time as he scrambles to finish – last minute tasks keep popping up every time he turns around. When he’s finally ready to call it done, he heads for the living room, expecting to find Steve and Wayne watching something on tv while they wait.
But it’s six o’clock, and there’s no sign of Steve. Wayne is standing against the big picture window, curtains shoved aside so he can look out.
“Hate to break it to ya Ed, but I’m not sure your boy is gonna make it. Snow’s really coming down out there.”
Eddie takes his uncle's place against the window, pressing his nose against the cold glass as he cups his hands to shield the glare. It's dark out, and the only thing illuminated by the porch light is a swirling wall of snowflakes. Judging by the snow already piled on the railing, it's collecting thick and fast.
"Shit," he mutters.
Concern immediately churns his stomach. If Steve left the house when he planned to, he should have arrived over half an hour ago.
Eddie goes to the phone on the end table by Wayne’s recliner, dialing the familiar number, hoping Steve decided to wait out the weather. The Christmas tree twinkles merrily in the corner; red, green, blue, and yellow lights reflecting off the silver tinsel while Eddie listens to the phone ring and ring - until the click of the answering machine picks up.
He hits the switch hook to end the call, re-dialing immediately. Ring, ring, ring and the click of the answering machine again.
He stays on the line long enough to hear the recorded voice of Steve’s father announce: “You’ve reached the Harrington residence. Leave a name, number, and brief message…” Eddie hangs up again with a frustrated growl.
Wayne watches with a worried frown. “You don’t think he would try to drive in this mess, do you? Not in that fancy car of his.”
Only someone who didn’t know Steve very well would ask that question. If Robin or Dustin were here, they’d already be suiting up for a search party.
Apparently, the expression on Eddie’s face is answer enough, because Wayne’s lips press into a thin line before he nods. “Right then. We’ll put the snow chains on the truck – as long as you go slow, you should be okay.”
They throw on coats and boots and a hat for Wayne, before trooping out into the whirling snow. Working in tandem, it only takes a few minutes to get the chains wrapped around the front tires of Wayne’s truck, latched and tensioned tight.
They agree that Wayne should stay behind in case Steve ends up calling after all, and then Eddie is off, pulling slowly down the drive.
The little house (part of a generous government settlement in exchange for their silence) is on the outskirts of town, surrounded by trees and cornfields – and no neighbors for at least ten miles. Which means the only light comes from the feeble beam of the truck’s headlights, struggling to penetrate the wall of snow. It’s like driving into a tunnel.
Eddie holds his foot tense above the gas pedal, giving it just enough juice to keep the old truck bumping along at a snail’s pace, listening to the chained tires grip and grind over the snow.
I never said ,‘I love you’, he thinks. I never said it. Steve could be dead or dying somewhere along the road, and the last thing Eddie ever said to him was, “See ya.”
It’s unbearable.
After a nerve-wracking 15 minutes, scanning and straining his eyes nearly to tears – Eddie finally spots a faint shape in the distance. Just the silhouette of a person, no car in sight.
It’s Steve. It’s gotta be.
He slams on the brakes – too hard. Even with the chains on, the old truck slides a few terrifying feet farther than intended. Heart pounding, Eddie throws it into park and wrenches the door open.
He hits the ground ready to run and nearly busts his ass as he sinks into snow over his ankles; staggering like a drunk toward the huddled figure of his boyfriend.
Eddie grips the other boy by the shoulders, eyes raking over him head to toe, searching for injuries. It’s hard to see – the headlights cast everything in sharp relief, full of shadow.
“Shit Steve… are you okay? I was so fucking worried, Jesus Christ.”
Steve pats his chest and laughs through the audible chattering of his teeth. “I’m f-fine Ed, I’m sorry. Didn’t mean to make you worry.”
“What happened?”
“Deer ran out in front of me. T-tried to miss it and the Beemer spun off the road. Car’s fine, but it’s stuck in a ditch.”
Eddie huffs out a relieved laugh and squeezes his boyfriend tight. Just stuck in a ditch – thank god. They’re so lucky the accident wasn’t serious; and lucky that Eddie came looking before Steve froze to death trying to make the long, cold walk to the house.
He pulls back to gaze into those beloved brown eyes, brushing aside a swoop of hair stiff with ice.
“I love you,” Eddie says abruptly. His breath hangs like dragon-smoke between them. It’s not how he intended this moment to go, but he can’t keep it in any longer. “I was afraid to say it, but then… when I thought something might have happened to you, all I could I think was that I never told you how I felt.”
“Eddie,” Steve whispers. “Eddie, I love you too.”
He laughs, giddy with relief, and cradles Steve’s jaw as he leans into a kiss. The world falls away - there’s nothing but Steve’s slightly chapped lips, warming slowly against his own, and the soft whisper of the snowflakes.
It’s perfect - until Steve shifts awkwardly and winces in pain.
“What the hell Steve, I thought you said you weren’t hurt?”
Steve grins sheepishly and leans against Eddie, trying to take the weight off his left leg. “I said the car was fine. I twisted my knee trying to climb out of that damn ditch.”
“Goddamnit… is there anything else I should know?”
His boyfriend unzips his jacket, revealing a towel-wrapped disc tucked securely against his chest. “I saved the pie,” he says proudly.
“Jesus Christ.” Overwhelmed by affection, Eddie kisses Steve again; it’s either that or shake the mad bastard. “Come on… let’s get you and your stupid pie home before you both freeze.”

an adjustment period
josh lyman x female!reader
word count: 2.7k
warnings: politically inaccurate portrayal of the white house, aka the west wing, projecting all my feelings onto josh lyman
a/n: me? posting two fics in one month? groundbreaking. I really am in my josh lyman era sue me idc.
“He will call you back at his next availability. I don’t know when that will be, Congressman.” You pulled the phone away from your ear as the Congressman yelled at you through the receiver. “I will let him know. Thank you, have a nice day Congressman.”
You slammed the receiver against the base until the rest of the communications bullpen looked over at you.
“I swear to god,” you mumbled to yourself as you barged into Sam’s office. “This is the first and last time I ever fill in for Ginger. Congressman who-gives-a-shit wants you to call him back at your earliest convenience.”
Sam looked up from his briefing, a small smirk on his face. “You would rather help me with research for the state of the union than answer my phone? I’m shocked.”
“Sam, if you don’t give me back my encyclopedia and the keys to my office,”
“Relax,” he interrupted, throwing your keys back to you which you caught easily. “I have a meeting in the oval, walk me there and I’ll give you your precious encyclopedia.”
“Fine.”
You walked through the communications bullpen, bumping into a frantic Kathy juggling a stack of papers in her hands.
“Sam owes you lunch everyday for the next two weeks until he leaves,” you told her, a small smile spreading over her face. “And if he tries to give you a hard time, call me, and then the President.”
“I’m not made of money, you know.” Sam piped in while leading you back into the route of the Oval Office.
“I have three words for you: Gage Whitney Partner.”
“Touché.”
The two of you rounded the corner past Josh’s office, and you couldn’t help but peer in to see if he was there.
It was a habit that started first out of survival. In the beginning of your tenure in the west wing you couldn’t walk past Josh’s office without him singing the Yale fight song. Then, after a heated argument in the Roosevelt room between the two of you over the relevance of the Oxford comma, you took every opportunity to occupy his free time to support your argument in favor of the beloved punctuation mark.
Four years had gone by, and somewhere along the way, the small squabbles turned into advice sessions on policy or speech writing. Sometimes, if either of you were feeling sentimental, you would share stories of your times at Yale.
Over time, it became part of your everyday routines to check in on one another, and it was one of the best parts of your day.
Behind writing speeches for the President of the United States, of course.
“Remind me to edit the concluding paragraphs of the President's speech to the education forum. Toby told me I’ve been using too much passive voice.”
“You do use too much passive voice.”
He stopped in front of Charlie’s desk, glaring at you for the comment.
“Hey, I like the passive voice as much as you, but Toby hates it, therefore I don’t use it.”
“He’ll be ready for you in a minute.” Charlie told Sam before leaving his desk for the Oval.
“Hey, have you guys found a new you yet? Toby has gone through like ten interviews and half of them left looking like they were going to cry.” You said as Charlie waved him in to the Oval. “I mean, the solution to this would be to not have you leave and become a congressman, because that’s boring and you can’t even write your own speeches. In fact, that’s exactly what you should do.”
You walked him to the doorway of the oval, waiting for him to hand you your encyclopedia that had been held hostage.
“Why don’t you come and join me and the President, he would like to be the one to tell you who we picked.”
“Why can’t you just tell me now? You know I have absolutely no patience for these things.”
He didn’t answer you, instead he looked into the Oval Office, a small smile on his face. You looked in after him, curious as to what he was so amused with.
All you saw was the President leaning against his desk, staring at the two of you, I’m sure not happy to be kept waiting.
“I don’t have all day you know,” President Bartlet joked before waving you both in.
Wait a minute.
“Sam,” You looked over at your boss, his smile now grinning from ear to ear. “No, Sam, it can’t-“
“Come on,” he interrupted, pushing you into the oval with a steady hand on your back.
You’d been in here plenty of times; usually with a group of people, and usually not when you’re getting offered the job of a lifetime. But when it’s just you and the President, it’s the most terrifying place in the world.
“I’ve never seen you scared a day in your life, don’t tell me today is the day you decide to be scared of the White House.” The President commented as you tried to relax.
“Well if you offer me a drink from the fancy decanter I can promise you I’ll be a lot less scared, sir.”
You and Sam sat down across from the president, and waited for the rest of your career change.
It was hard for you to listen to anyone praise your work ethic, character, and dedication to your job, let alone from the commander in chief himself. You worked for Toby, so there weren't a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings being spread around. So when the president mentioned that, yes, Sam recommended you for his position, but it was Toby that practically locked him in the Oval Office saying it had to be you, you were more than shocked.
You knew deep down he was a softie.
After accepting the position with absolutely no hesitation, it was off to the races with another meeting for the president.
“Mr. President, just one more question.” You asked as he walked you out. “Is there any way we can rework this position so that Toby answers to me and not the other way around?”
“Dream big,” the President said through his laughter, which brought a smile to your face.
Once you and Sam cleared through Charlie and Mrs. Landingham, you landed a sharp smack to his chest.
“What the hell was that for?” He asked, resting his hand over his hurt chest.
“You couldn’t have told me that you were going to nominate me for your job? Or that the president was going to offer me the job himself in the Oval Office?!”
“Well, then I wouldn’t be able to see your anxious shaking and clammy hands as the President raves about you.”
You rolled your eyes as he wrapped an arm around your shoulder, and the smile quickly returned to your face.
“You deserve this. I’m just sad I won’t be able to see you and Josh fight in Senior Staff meetings.”
“Oh don’t worry, we’ll be visiting you on the hill.”
Sam walked you back to your office and handed you the responsibility of finishing the President’s remarks for tonight’s Town Hall meeting.
“If it isn’t the new Deputy Communications Director in the flesh.”
Josh was waiting for you in your office, holding a gold box in his hand while swiveling around in your office chair.
“Technically we’re equals now, so I can tell you to get the hell out of my chair without fear of losing my job.”
“Technically, I outrank you, but since you don’t answer to me, I’ll let it slide.” He stood up from your chair, moving to stand across from you. “Did you quake under the stress of wondering what the president wanted from you?”
“Did you come here to congratulate me or make fun of me?” You asked, a smirk appearing on his face. “And is that present in your hand for me or your new accessory?”
“Do you have to ruin all the fun?” He commented and handed you the present.
You opened the box, taking out the tissue paper to reveal a book, The Social Contract to be exact.
“I know we both went to Yale, but I’m not sure I share the same affinity for the literature of Rousseau that you do, I’m more of an Austen or Didion kind of gal.” You joked.
“I thought I’d get you something that you could quote from in your State of the Union address. You know the President loves the cheese.”
You opened the cover of the book to find a note from Josh written on the inside. There were butterflies in your stomach before you read the first word, because that’s just the effect he had on you.
The relationship you shared with Josh is one that you greatly cherished. Your work rarely overlapped, being an underling of Sam in the communications department didn’t leave a lot of room for talking major policy with Josh. But after your own squabbles, and then overhearing a debate between you and Toby only days into your tenure at the White House, he quickly found any reason to work with you.
He would volunteer to work on research with you when he had any spare time, and he always requested you when he needed an extra hand when heading over to the Hill. You finally asked him about it a few months into the arrangement, and he shrugged before admitting he’d never seen someone stand up to Toby like that.
“You’re gonna go further than a speech writer in the communications department. One day I think you may run this whole building.”
You read aloud from his note, the same thing he said to you three years ago on your walk to the Hill.
You didn’t think he meant it then, and you surely can’t believe it now.
“I told you I’m good with words, Sam and Toby just never give me a chance.”
You closed the book, the weight of this new position pushing you back against your desk. You’re senior staff now. You’re in charge. You are going to be in the room where it happens.
“What if I’m not good at it.” You admitted in the open air.
“Hold on-“ Josh tried to interrupt you.
“Sam, Toby, and the President of the United States just told me they want me for this job. I don’t have a law degree, Josh. I have a Bachelor’s degree in English and a Masters in Political Science from Yale, but I don’t make laws. I don’t have an illustrious career in politics, I’m not even a head speechwriter for Christ’s sake. I crumble under the image of the Oval Office, and unless I’m correcting Toby’s grammar, I don’t particularly like to debate with people. I am going to be in charge of a department, responsible for people to get things done the way I want. I barely get things done the way I want. I am not going to be good at this.”
“Hey, I went to Yale, don’t drag her down.”
You threw him a look as he moved from his spot in the doorway.
“For the last three years, I’ve watched you handle more crises and speeches than any other deputy in the communications office. Sure, the President showered you with compliments for your writing skills, but it’s you, the person behind the speeches, who is going to make real change here.”
“Josh,” you protested, your voice becoming a whisper as you grew uncomfortable with the accolades once again.
“I’m serious,” he began, moving to stand in front of you. “No one ends up in the West Wing by chance. You were meant to be here. And I have no doubt in my mind that you are going to run this building one day.”
You shook your head, letting your hair fall in front of your face to shield Josh from seeing the tears forming in your eyes. No one has ever believed in you like Josh does.
“Hey,” he worriedly said, slowly reaching for your hand. “What’s really bothering you?”
You looked down at your hands, fingers laced with his for what felt like the hundredth time. The line was always a bit blurred with Josh. You worked on so many projects together, spending hours on end in one office or another. Three years of small spaces and critical decision making led to post-meeting breakdowns, confiding in people you spent hours on end with.
Josh quickly became your person at work, and after the shooting, you became his. Neither of you spoke of it, you just knew that he would be there for you whenever you needed it. Josh knew it all, from screaming matches with Toby, to family emergencies, and the never ending question of what your purpose in life is, which was looming over everyone’s head that worked in the West Wing.
You had always felt something more for Josh. Maybe you read too much into it when he would walk you home from a late night event at the White House, or how he would call you in the middle of the night to get your thoughts on how to best proceed with policy. It was easy between you two, and with Bartlett’s second term in the White House now halfway through, you thought this friendship would finally shift to something more.
But now that you were equals, senior advisors to the President, holding extreme responsibilities for the republic in your hands, you knew that the dynamic would change. There was no room to slide into a new relationship.
“Things are going to change now, between us. And I know that nothing has really been said but, I’d like to think something was… shifting into more.” Your voice trailed off at the end, embarrassment taking over.
“There was.” Josh reassured you, a small smile breaking over his face.
You nodded, and in an attempt to hide the goofy smile crossing your own face, you continued to look down at your hands. You reached out for his other hand, which he gladly surrendered to you.
“Things don’t have to be different. There are no rules against a devilishly handsome Deputy Chief of Staff dating a gorgeous Deputy Communications Director.” He joked, trying to get a laugh out of you.
He was right, there really wasn’t a rule against it. And if there was, you’re sure it had been broken before.
“I’m sure you’re right. But if I really want to make a difference here, I need to focus on this job, and not be distracted by an annoying Deputy Chief of Staff.”
“I understand,” he said with a smile, giving your hands a squeeze. “And I think a two month adjustment period is plenty of time before I ask you out on a date.”
“Josh,” you said through a laugh, “Are you really that impatient you need to put a timetable on it?”
“Yes. Four months sound better?”
“Six months.” you said, but as you looked at him longer, you knew you couldn’t possibly last that long. “With a check-in at the three month mark to see how I’m adjusting.”
“That sounds like a great plan.”
A great plan indeed.
To an outsider, the two of you looked like school kids interacting with their first crush. And that’s exactly how you felt, butterflies in your stomach and your brain all fuzzy.
“Josh!” You could hear Toby yelling through your closed office door, and you couldn’t help but sigh.
“You’re Director is a real pain in my ass.”
“I tried to get his job while I was in there, but the President said no.”
He laughed and tried to pull away, but you held on to his hand even tighter.
“Josh,” he turned back to you, and you couldn’t help but wrap your arms around him. It took him a minute, but his arms wrapped around your waist, and you finally felt like you could do this. “Thank you for the book.”
“You’re welcome. You’ve got this.” He said and dropped a kiss to your shoulder, then your cheek before pulling away. “I’ve gotta go find the dictator before he breaks every door down.”
“Go ahead, I’m going to spare myself from him for as long as I can.”
“Ok, I’ll see you in Senior Staff tomorrow morning. Newbie brings a full breakfast.” he joked.
“In your dreams,” you said with a roll of your eyes as he went to exit your office.
“You really are going to do great here.” He winked and wrapped his knuckles on the doorframe before yelling into the bullpen himself for Toby.
Yeah, there’s no way you guys are lasting six months.

I loved this post by @8x06eddie so much that I just had to start writing something about it. It’s a classic 5 + 1 fic with a lot of domestic buddie!
Here’s a snippet:
~~~
The first time Eddie called Buck amor, it was entirely unexpected and probably unplanned—if Eddie’s expression afterward said anything.
It was early morning at the Diaz household, and the “two and a half men”—as Eddie liked to call them, though it was becoming increasingly questionable as Chris grew up—were getting ready for the day. Christopher was in the bathroom, brushing his teeth and getting dressed for school. Buck was in the kitchen, making his certified pancakes, the ones he’d promised Chris the night before. Meanwhile, Eddie was frantically pacing through the house, checking every nook and cranny for something he’d lost.
It was their 24 off that day, but bad luck meant someone from Shift B had called in sick, and Bobby had asked if one of them could cover. Eddie volunteered, and Buck wasn’t particularly happy about it. There weren’t many times their shifts didn’t align or they didn’t work together and most of those involved one of them getting injured—or worse. Eddie had spent the entire prior evening reassuring him, telling him it was going to be fine and that maybe it was a good idea for them to spend some time apart before they actually became codependent. Buck had huffed at that. What if he wanted to be codependent? Stupid buzzword.
“Buck,” Eddie called from the living room before pacing through the kitchen, still searching. “Amor, have you seen my keys?”
Buck froze, and so did Eddie—for half a second, at least, probably realizing exactly what he’d just said. Eddie quickly tried to play it off, continuing to pace the room, looking under everything he could find and avoiding Buck’s eyes. It didn’t fool Buck, though. Eddie had this thing he did when he was embarrassed—his cheeks would turn a rosy pink that Buck found super endearing. Right now, they were pinker than Buck had ever seen them.
“Uh…” Buck said, still dumbfounded. He caught a whiff of the pancake burning in front of him and quickly flipped it, cursing mentally. “Have you checked the shelf by the chimney?”
Eddie poked himself in the temple, his expression making it clear he hadn’t thought of that. Without another word, he disappeared back into the living room.
When Eddie returned, he poked his head into the kitchen, smiling at Buck, his cheeks still faintly rosy.
“Found them. Thanks. See you this evening?”
“Sure,” Buck replied, smiling back.
“Love you,” Eddie said casually.
“Love you, too.”
With another smile and a quick “Bye, Chris!” shouted from the living room, Eddie rushed out of the house, leaving Buck alone with his thoughts—and a raised spatula.
It was… it was the first time Eddie had called him that. And Buck? He was pretty much melting on the spot, chest warm and butterflies in his stomach, overwhelmed by how much he loved it. It was this sweet, unexpected thing, born from their budding relationship—so intimate, so domestic, so theirs. He’d never felt anything like this before, and all he wanted now was for Eddie to say it again. Over and over.
“Buck? You okay?”
He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t even hear Christopher join him in the kitchen. The boy was looking at him with a raised eyebrow, the expression so eerily familiar that Buck couldn’t help but wonder who exactly he’d picked it up from.
“Yeah, bud,” Buck replied, all smiles and heart still fluttering. “Ready for pancakes?”
Mikey is torn. And a little frightened.
He noticed, and took heed to, the changed pictures on the wall. He noticed, and took heed to, the shut bedroom door.
He noticed-...he noticed, and took heed to, the ring left on the shelf beneath the mirror.
A placement inconspicuous enough to seem accidental, but visible enough to send a message.
You knew.
Against all of Manjiro’s wildest hopes and dreams, you somehow knew about his infidelity.
Manjiro wasn’t sure how, but he knew he was going to absolutely maul whoever had the nerve to ruin your blissful ignorance.
‘I’d been so careful,’ he nearly screams in his own head, frantically pacing the living room floor, trying not to be too loud so as not to disturb you.
Bottom lip tightly pinched between his thumb and forefinger, Manjiro’s eyes darted to and fro wildly as he contemplated what his next actions should be.
‘Should I come clean, or keep up the act. The latter will only do more damage in the long run, but it’s too late now anyway.’
His thoughts are just bordering on manic when his phone lights up with a message.
Manjiro has half a mind to ignore it, and he moves to do so, until the phone begins actually ringing.
With a low growl, he snatches the device and checks the caller ID, choking a bit when he sees who it is.
Her.
Manjiro knows, knows that now is absolutely not the appropriate time to entertain her. He knows, and can feel with every fiber of his being that the correct course of action is to ignore her call, delete and block her number and never speak to her again. He knows he should be entirely focused on figuring out how he’s going to convince you not to abandon him.
But, for as much as he knows he should do these things, he doesn’t.
Instead, he answers the call, throwing a forlorn glance up the stairs where you are before darting out the door minutes later.
When I get your call, I’m out the door not a minute more.
Like an animal, I lose control, it’s illogical.
Tumblr media
Mikey’s not in love with her.
Of this he’s sure.
The only one who’s ever truly held his heart is you.
You, who only ever gave Manjiro your love and devotion.
You, who has given more of yourself to him than Manjiro could ever hope to give of himself in return.
You, who blesses his dreams and stalks his nightmares.
You, who Manjiro positively adores.
But that is so difficult to remember when he’s buried balls deep in her.
Her.
Mikey is aware that the relationship between him and this woman is entirely unhealthy.
After all, she has no backbone, seemingly no will of her own. She’s like a little doll for Manjiro to manipulate and toss away when he’s no longer entertained.
It’s only the fact that this toy possesses a strange alluring quality, one which Manjiro finds himself inexorably drawn to time and time again.
Manjiro feels like, knows that he’s become an absolute monster. The worst kind, the kind that lies and cheats and steals and takes and takes and takes.
But when he feels her walls tighten around him, milking him of every drop of cum- when her lips find his, and their tongues dance in a battle of dominance which Manjiro is quickly given- when she whispers sweet nothings and promises of dedication solely to him in his ear, he finds he can’t really care.
Tumblr media
When he arrives home the next morning, Manjiro doesn’t expect what he finds.
You are there, in all your achingly dazzling glory, sitting on the couch and dressed in only one of his sweaters. It’s unusually chilly in the house, and Manjiro shivers just a bit.
You haven’t looked up from where your eyes are fixed on a catalogue that sits in your lap, your other hand occupied by your cell phone.
You’re chatting and laughing with someone, but Manjiro is unable to tell who.
“I know, it has! I’m sorry about that by the way, I’ve just been so busy running here and there and everywhere. The shop keeps me quite busy. Speaking of, how has business been? Booming, as they say, I hope?”
Oh, so it’s Izana.
Manjiro can feel himself scowling.
He doesn’t necessarily have anything against his adoptive brother; though they didn’t always get along the best when they were younger, over the years, Manjiro had grown to respect the man Izana had become, and even feel some pride in him.
Problem was, Manjiro had always been aware of Izana’s little crush on you.
He wasn’t sure when it had initially developed, since you’d only known Izana for as long as you’d known Manjiro, but Mikey couldn’t deny that it annoyed him, how Izana still pined after you even years into your marriage.
You belonged to Manjiro, and Manjiro only.
Shaking the thought from his head, and trying to school his expression to something more neutral, Mikey finally made his presence known.
“__-”
Without even looking up, you hold up a hand, effectively halting Manjiro in his words and steps.
“That sounds wonderful! Yeah, I’ll send you the information for the restaurant. Let me know when you’ve got some time in your schedule and we can make more solid plans from there. It was so nice talking to you!”
Realizing how awkward it is to just remain standing in front of you, Manjiro quietly and carefully takes a seat next to you, noticing with a small grimace how you shrink further into your corner of the sofa.
You exchange a few more words with Izana, smiling and laughing until you finally bid each other goodbye.
Once the call has ended, Manjiro opens his mouth to speak, but before he can, you close the book in your lap with more force than is probably necessary. You take a deep breath, turning to him with a tight smile.
“Have fun last night?”
A cold shock zips down Manjiro’s spine.
Is this it? Are you finally going to confront him directly? Demand a divorce and walk out on him?
‘No. __, y-you can’t. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry sorrysorrysorrysorry_…’
“-jiro! Manjiro!”
Without realizing it, Manjiro had begun hyperventilating, chest heaving and eyes watering intensely.
“You need to breathe, Manjiro. Slow down, breathe with me.”
Slowly, steadily, Manjiro matched his breathing pattern to yours. It took several minutes for him to calm down, but once he eventually did, he found himself unable to speak and respond to your question.
He knew it made him look incredibly guilty, but he figured since you already knew, it didn’t really matter.
You did know, right?
“You had me worried there for a second. Nothing bad happened I hope?” You lift a quizzical brow, and as Manjiro scans your expression before answering, he doesn’t detect any anger or malice in your gaze.
Just genuine curiosity.
‘Wait, could you still be in the dark?’
“No, nothing-...nothing bad happened. Sorry to have worried you, I’ve just been feeling a little anxious lately.”
“How unusual,” you hum, a fingertip resting on your chin. “Should I schedule an appointment with your therapist for you?”
You sound so genuinely concerned, Manjiro is starting to think that his earlier worry was for nothing.
After all, Manjiro knows you, and he knew that if you truly had discovered something like infidelity on his part, there was no way you’d be behaving so calmly.
“Yeah, sure. That might help. Thanks, love.” Manjiro leans forward for a kiss, and to his utter surprise, you accept, even gently pressing back.
“No problem! I’m here to help.”
“W-who was that on the phone earlier?” Manjiro’s not sure why he stutters, but if you pick up on it, you don’t make it known.
“NaNa! We’re planning to meet up for dinner when he’s got some time in his schedule.” Manjiro notices the tiny, fond smile that forms on your lips upon speaking that infuriating nickname, and he can feel his previously neutral expression morph into a slight frown.
“Oh.”
“Yeah, we might even do a whole hangout day! We were discussing the details when you came in, in the midst of just chatting and catching up. Did you know that he recently adopted a puppy? He always struck me as a cat person but, I guess you never really know.”
Your eyes shine almost comically as you gush about Izana, and Mikey can feel jealousy bubble up hot in his chest.
“I’ve missed NaNa so much, we hardly ever get to talk. But I’m so glad his business is growing, and he sounded so happy. It’s a wonderful thing really.”
“Yeah, wonderful.”
Manjiro knows he needs to be more watchful of his attitude, especially given the look you’re currently giving him, but he can’t help how he responds to hearing you, his wife, fawn all over his brother.
“Are you ok, Manjiro? Perhap you should go lay down and rest. I could imagine you’re a little worn out from earlier.”
Manjiro agrees wordlessly, standing and beginning to make his way upstairs. His thoughts are all over the place, such that he misses your eyes burning holes into his back, somewhat contrasting the slight smirk that lifts the corners of your mouth.
‘Oh Manjiro, you’re too easy.’
